Swimming spare wheel, yet no tell tale sign of water ingress

Morning,

As the title suggests I have a problem that seems to never show the source of itself, basically the spare wheel is filling up with water.

After trying practically everywhere to look for said leak each time the result is fruitless. The rear lights have been out, the trim has been off, the seal has been checked and still the water collects, I've read about the different talegate glass revisions which mine has and I would doubt that would have effect on said water retention.

I've read on here something about the vents in the boot for distribution of the air pressure when closing the boot but again how can water be pushing itself up into the boot especially with the amount that's there!

Any help or suggestions?

Do you park it in a slope angle or its always parked on flat surfaces. I have seen water in the spare wheel area once, but then again I only opened up the spare wheel area only once. Is should do it more often after a wash...

That time I found water I had it parked in a slope angle and the front of the car was facing downwards

I've never had it on my mk4, but on my mk2 the light seals were the cause. Leaks in the boot are always hard to find, it could be that it is getting in from underneath whilst driving. Try putting the seats down and running a hose over the boot to see if any water comes in. Also check for white marks on any of the seals, this can point to leaks as the water can dis-colour the rubber.

Funny you should mention the light seals as I took the rear outer cluster out and the rubber was a bit white aswell as the nuts holding the light in not very tight again cleaned the rubber on the drivers side and did it up tight only to find a single drop in the spare wheel area even after the car had been stood :S strange

Have had a lot of condensation in the car of late since the weather has changed and it's become cooler and damper. Noticed some "wetness" below the boot mat to the rear off side so investigated today. This looks like condensation but did find 10mm of water in the wheel well!! So have dried it all out and placed paper towels around the boot under the mat to see if I can determine where the water is getting in. I suspect the rear offside lamp cluster seal has failed. Will check next time we have some rain!!

sometimes replacing the pollen filter can help with condensation in the car. :L
