Ie would the wheel soeze up and cause me to go crashing off the road into some old grannies or would it still be drivable?
I presume my wheel bearing is kaput you see. Though i'm not entirely sire. Last year I bought a new set of fox rims for my mondy complete with el cheapo tyres (£50 each, about £300 for the actual rims). However due to unforseen circumstances, i wasn't able to get it road taxed or insured until the beginning of june this year so it had been sat on my driveway unmoved most of that time.
After getting it road worthy I noticed something. It sounds like the left wheel was rubbing, though it sounded a bit more like grinding, metal on metal. I just had the rear discs and pads done at the same time as the mot so i thought it was something to do with that. they even said the rear calipers were mearly kaput but they just about rescued them when doing the brakes.
Anyway, the noise hasn't really got worse until the other day after taking a particularly long trip. Now it seems to have got slightly louder and more rumbly. It kind of makes the car sound like its got a f1 engine in it running at low revs sometimes, but not always. I also went flying round a roundabout on sunday and it sounded like it had got louder still after that. And just now i was driving down the road at no particular speed and all of a sudden it made an extremely lous vibrating noise but only for a second. Im starting to wonder if i should maybe avoid driving until I get it fixed.
I've had both front and rear go......none of them showed signs of play, they were just noisey.I would replace asap,if its the rear they are simple to do,i had mine done in around 40mins and i had never done one before....fronts require alot more work and need pressed in/out.
Bought a car for a friend once that had been written off by a transit wheel that got loose at 30mph-ish and hit dead-centre of the car I bought. Lot of energy in a fast moving wheel...
Yea, a good few year's ago had a 306 gti, yes a pug before you guys take the p@@s that failed in a rather brown under pant moment, didn't even know it was on its way out.
Well thanks all for the responses. That's all I need to know to sort this now lol. As I said I only left it this long as I thought it may just be the new rim not fitting properly (though all the others do), or maybe the brake calipers grinding somewhere. I'll give it a check later and see of it has a bit of wobble. Its the rear nearside wheel that's doing it incidentally forgot to mention that.
Also apologies for my god awful spelling grammar. Typing this on a phone with fat fingers...
had one go on a old car with a inner and outer bearing, outer bearing went and car shook all over the road. did see a wheel separate once down in london, in that case the wheel came off and the car took a violent turn right and smashed into parked cars, may have been lower balljoint though.
So, based on my symptoms I described would this definitely be the wheel bearings that need doing? I'm fairly certain of it myself given what I've looked up online, plus I did as suggested; jacked up the rear and wobbled the wheel. It doesn't seem to have any give in it when moving it side to side (holding the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock and pulling with one hand and pushing with the other then alternating). It does however pop out and back in a tiny bit if I pull and push with both hands at the same time.
Also when spinning it, it is a bit difficult to do so and it won't freely roll, almost like the brake is ever so slightly stuck on (the handbrake was off obviously when I did this). It also definitely sounds like it's making a grinding noise when spinning it.
When driving the noise definitely seems to get worse if I got down a slight bump in the road on that side, or when I'm cornering to the right, though it eventually settles back down.
So yea as I say I'm fairly certain of it myself but, having just looked on fordpartsuk's site, I find the rear wheel hub is around 240 quid inc VAT. I nearly fell off the throne when I read that.
Well I think I might replace the hub anyway, even if it is the brakes, since if it'll cause the bearing greese to melt and what not I expect me driving around on it for the last few months has fooked the bearings anyway (judging by it making that got awful seconds-long vibrating sound when I went round a corner the other Sunday anyway). Better safe than sorry?
Well, maybe. But I have a history of replacing the wrong parts on this car to fix a problem anyway so what the hell. Lol. Still I know the rear calipers definitely need doing though. Not sure I fancy the £300+ price take for the pair of them though. I can at least get the hub from SNK or whatever they're called for half of what Foray Ford wants for them. Not sure if getting non-Motorcraft calipers is a good idea though?
Lol, true. If I had any sense at all I'd buy a more modern one. I already need to do a two year overdue service on it since she's running as rough as buggery at the moment. Truly is never ending with a 13 year old car.
