My 13 plate diesel Titanium X Estate came fitted with Continental Sport Contact 2 tyres size 235/45 18 they wore out in under 14,00 miles during which I found them noisey and they followed lines in the road. Pretty grim really.

My last Mondeo diesel was a 59 plate and it came with Goodyear tyres and the car handled a lot better than this one.

So I have just had a pair of Goodyear Eagle Assymetric 2 tyres fitted to the front. The difference is astounding. Steering feels more positive, doesn't follow lines in the road and the front end is much quieter.

Worth every penny of the £160 each

Hi hobbynut. Good of you to point out your observations. I've got the same contis on the front of my tit x sport diesel. Mine are 19's. I have to say tho I'm surprised at your findings. I find the wear is rather good, about 1.5mm in 5k miles and hold the road very well (when warmed up). There must be significant differences between estates and saloons. Let us know how you get on with your goodyears.

Continental Sport Contact 5 came with my car when I bought it in February. Far from new, but still in a condition that I thought they wold last through this summer season at least.

Well they didn't. Half way through, they were worn out, and as I didn't calculate on buying new tyres this season I went to a local dealer and got a good price on Marshal Matrac KH35.

I was a bit sceptical, but so far I'm impressed with them. A lot quieter, (at least for now) and not much difference in handling. As of wear I don't know but they'll probably last through next season at least, so probably not wearing faster than the Contis either.

If I get a simillar price on Marshals next time, I will definatly consider buying them again. If not, I'll probably go with Falkens which I've used a lot on other cars before, and been happy with.

The local tyre dealers that I went to actually stocks Continental but he said they don't sell many due to excessive wear issues. He has suggested to Continental's company rep that he is wasting his time by visiting them as their tyres are " pants "

He said he wouldn't use them on any of his vehicles.

They offered me nitrogen inflation for all four tyres so I decided to give it a try. I have read varying reports about this subject and the articles seem to be inconclusive.

Time will tell

alot of the companies are making them softer to get better EU tyre label rating ...hence increase wear.....Pirelli's are going on mine next time up ...have good rep for wear....had P6000 ...way back when and was pleased with them...so have pre-chosen the P7 cinturato blue in a bout 6 months time...great reviews too

It'll be a while Mzo as I don't cover alot of miles and my current Avons ZV5 are holding up pretty well.......my cousin recently had Goodtear efficient grip performance on his volvo C30 diesel (previous were conti-sort contact 5) and he said they def feel as tho' they 'roll' easier and slightly better ride....wear rate? he just had them put on ..so time will tell

The Sport Contact 2 is an old tyre now. I'm not surprised it is bettered by the F1A2.

The Sport Contact 5 is superb however. One of the best you can buy in terms of wet and dry grip.

The excessive wear claims are false too. I have had almost 20k out of front sets on my old ST220 and that's with a V6 up front. I will be putting some on my new Mondeo when the time comes. An excellent tyre IMHO.

claiming absolutes is always risky business.......its obvious that the 5's superceded the 2 and 3 but conti do appear to have an excellent rep...with the caveat that the glowing reviews are from German magazines.....Germany likes to protect industries that it generally dominates.....read alloy wheels

etc. Not just German tests.

It comes out pretty highly in most cases, it's not usually a coincidence :p

I don't think that means anything tbh. A good tyre is a good tyre. I'm not really interested in putting mid-range tyres (or whatever cheaper ones the tyre shop recommends {read: the ones which have the largest profit margin for him} that week) on my 200+bhp performance-oriented car. :)

really? try going on a Fiat or Alfa forum and start a thread entitled....'AutoExpress reviews are 100% unbiased'....better wear some F1 style flameproof clothing....autoexpress is German owned

if the Finnish and Russian mag results match up with the German ones....that usually's good enough for me

That's a pretty funky tin-foil hat you're wearing there.

Consider this:

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2014-Auto-Bild-Top-15-Summer-Tyre-Test.htm

They put Michelin and Pirelli tyres just above Continental. Michelin are a French company, and Pirelli are Italian.

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2014-Auto-Express-Summer-Tyre-Test.htm

The Contis are 5th here. Dunlop/Goodyear are American companies, and Hankook are Korean.

Also, Auto Express isn't owned by anyone German. The publishing company is British.

Please don't spout absolute rubbish without any basis whatsoever.

#20 ·
Can you not read? I've just linked you to two German reviews where the top tyres in their tests aren't from German manufacturers!

I'll say it again. Please don't spout misinformation or conspiracy nonsens without any basis.

Also, Auto Express is a UK-owned magazine.

its German owned buddy....and because conti doesn't come first makes the tests unbiased? lol.....take up my challenge...register on any fiat or Alpha forum and post your thread.....got the balls for that?......

people who shout conspiracy and conspiracy theory just hate any other opinion....as it burst their little bubble...grow up pal

#22 ·
Er.

How does Conti not coming first make them anything BUT unbiased? Please enlighten me. I genuinely am curious.

Here's a challenge for you, "buddy". Prove that they're biased.

Preferably without having to post on some other random forum full of butthurt individuals who are upset that a magazine called their car rubbish or something.

#23 ·
never said they were biased or posted that..buddy boy.....but yet you assumed it...i said the vast majority of mags on tyrereviews are German..and they are...I also said you'd have a hard time convincing any Fiat or Alpha owners that their reviews were not biased....but regardless of your protestation you still won't. take the challenge up

fiat and alpha .forum members are bulshitters? best they don't find you in a google search.bullshit forums? how arrogant is that....register for one and repeat your venom on there.....

never said they were biased
Erm

with the caveat that the glowing reviews are from German magazines.....Germany likes to protect industries that it generally dominates
its German owned buddy....and because conti doesn't come first makes the tests unbiased?
Right.

Anyway... Why are you so obsessed with the "challenge"? I don't particularly care what some people on another forum might think, personally! If you're so intent on them offering up their tuppence worth, why don't you create a thread and point them in this direction? Actually, don't, as it'll only derail the OP's thread further and upset the admins.

It's also clear that neither do you care, and nor do you want to offer any sort of rational thinking. You merely seem confused since I have clearly demonstrated that the German magazines aren't putting German-made tyres at the top of their tests, despite your beliefs to the contrary.

P.s. it's 'Alfa', not 'Alpha'.

#25 ·
the OP's thread was upset the instant you took the hump....no toleration for other opinions is a shame on you...and all ire is from your posts not mine

you cannot accept that I didn't say or post that they were biased its an assumption you are still carrying..

referring to typo errors is childish

redarding the aministrators...let them judge between your posts and mine

Quite a bit of banter going on here. The best tyre reviews are from us who have them on our cars. The same car tyre combination can drum up a dozen different reviews.
So what have I said wrong?
The best reviewers are those with the sport derived cars and drive them as such. Those then who drove sensibly can be sure that the tyre will more than meet their needs.
I don't have a favourite tyre brand anymore. Back in the 90's my cars ran pirelli as they suited my then rover/mg cars brilliantly.
