Hi if i was to buy a replacement alternator:

1. ovs Ford genuine brand new is best

2. heared bad reports from cheap refurbs

so was wondering if there were any middle ground brands that refurb alts to top qulaity. Ebay has alts by AAPOLDHAM and REMY. Are they any good? do they swap out all the parts for new or just chuck bushes in and tart up before selling on?

there are 'RTX' alts on there for 60 quid!! but there are others for £160 so shows the difference! I imagine ford are 300+

Thanks

anyone who has had the plesure of doing the alternator job on a v6 would agree that you would not fit a mk1/ or 2£10 scrappie alternator that has lilkey done 100K+. Imagine if it was faulty or was on its way out soon, it would reduce you to tears!

I haven't done this job, but it is quite 'busy' under the bonnet of a V6, so imagine that you are right...even if it does go easier second time.

One option is to get a scrappie alternator, and get it reconditioned. Costs a tenner more than getting you own alt reconditioned, but you are without the car for less time... The other is to buy an 'exchange, re-con' item, and they give you your deposit back when you give them the old alt.

The trouble with reconditioners is that you never know; one might be good, another hopeless. If you can get a recommendation locally, or if you can ask your trusted local garage (...assuming...) who they are happy with, then that might be something.

I'd imagine REMY, formerly Delco REMY, are ok. I think they were sold off some time ago, but at least they were a professional outfit. The AAPOLDHAM sounds as if they are, in some way, connected with Oldham, the battery supplier, but I have no further info.

I was going to recommend someone like carpart4less, but their alt has 'Lucas' written on the box (and, it might be the wrong one), but having Lucas on the box isn't exactly what you'd call an unequivocal recommendation. Maybe they are made in Thailand or China by someone else, these days, so you never know...

When I changed the alternator on my old ST24, I got a unipart unit (not sure I you can still get them) from Halfords as I have one of their trade cards. IIRC it cosy me £120. Seemed to work fine although the battery light would come on at very high revs, but never got any worse.

I'm sure you know it's a bit of a job to do but plenty of posts here about it.

I had a reco fail straight away when I did my ST24 a few years back. In the end I got a chinese alternator and it worked perfectly fine. But yesss, they are a ball ache to change out
