front strut top mount nut coming undone all the time and clunk noises

hi i have a clunking knocking noise when going over bumpy road, that mysteriously turned up after i fitted new brake pads.

i have re-done the brakes so not them.

I have checked all the suspension and its all lovley and tight, except the top mount nut (under the rubber disc and nut which covers it).

So to explain again, to get to this nut, you remove the big 18mm nut on the top of the strut tower and remove the rubber bung thing, to gain access to the strut top mount nut, which is 18mm too, but cruicially, not a locknut. - now this nut keeps coming undone, despite me torquing it up correctly.

anyone else suffered this? fitting a new nut isnt that straightforward as the strut would have to be taken off the car id imagine and dissasembled and reassembled and refitted?

what you think?

thanks

Just kidding, to be honest it shouldn`t come off like that unless there`s something wrong. :huh: Either the nut is just worn out or the whole top assembly isn`t in its correct place and when you are driving it keeps vibrating and shaking and eventually coming loose and no, the whole assembly doesn`t need to come off if you are fitting a new nut because the weight of the car is holding the spring in place.

+1 for threadlock...

i believe Amadeus is correct, it is possibly do-able in situ.

Believe me, i took both of the nuts off on our dark front yard just few minutes ago with a ratchet in my hand and flashlight in my mouth. :}

Nice one thank you. Haynes does say it needs a new one when it is disturbed so maybe it has been loose for a long time!

if it is a nyloc nut, it should be replaced every time it is undone. :L
