I have a Ford Mondeo 2008 1.8 diesel, which suddenly cut out when driving at 30mph. The man from the AA said it was the cambelt. But noting that it was a chain a local Mechanic said it was the Auxiliary belt.
Does this usually result in the engine being knackered and having to get a new recon one or one from a scrapyard.
Many thanks if anyone has any advice. From what i have read so far it sounds bad news.
If I remember right some of the early 1.8s had a chain, some had a belt. If you have a timing belt and it snapped yes, you're in for a world of hurt usually. The pistons end up smashing into the valves and basically destroy the whole top half of the engine.
If it's just the aux belt you can usually just slap a new one on and go about your day as normal. If the engine cut out it's unlikely to be the aux belt though.
Its done 90000miles. Little service history to ascertain whether any form of Cambelt/aux belt has been undertaken in past. I have owned it for a year and 18k miles in that time. Sounds like im one of those unlucky ones who had a rubber cambelt.
