Side Indicator removal.

Thought I'd ask this in here rather than just in the Mk3 Mondeo forum because I've noticed that many fords use the same side indicators... makes sense to lower costs.,

How exactly do you remove them to change a bulb, and what bulbs do they use. Is it a standard 501 with an orange gel cap as you tend to find on others? My side covers are clear rather than orange.

Do you have to move the wheel arch liner and come in from the rear or can they be popped off from the outside. If anyone has any pics... that would help a great deal... Or a how to guide.

Hi
The side repeaters are removed from outside. They have lugs top and bottom that hold them into the front wing.
If you take something like a credit card and slide it down the wing and onto the top of the side repeater the action of pushing down will free the top lug and the top of the repeater lens can be pulled away from the wing. Once the top is out the whole repeater will come out in an upward motion.

To reinstall the side repeater place the bottom lug inside the wing, press it down slightly and pop the top lug into place, job done.

I've changed the bulbs loads of times but can't for the life of me remember if it's a 501 right now, sorry.
As your repeater lenses are clear you have the choice of an amber or chromed amber bulb. I always stuck with plain Amber ones as they show up a lot better in daylight.

Right,
Because I was annoyed I couldn't remember what bulb was used I've just gone out in the dark and removed a side repeater.

Ths pic shows the repeaters bottom lug by my thumb and the twist out bulb holder. Yes it's a 501 wedge bulb.

Popped the cover off, pulled the bulb and inspected it... Didn't look blown. Put it back in and it worked fine.

There are signs of water marks inside the cover, so I think some moisture was to blame.

That's the second time recently that a bulb has stopped working and then found to be fine... and after putting it back in everything worked fine. Happened with my reversing lights a few months ago.

The cover looked very fragile, the clip seemed like it could break very easily... I might replace it or at least fit a new seal.

Well... I should have expected that. Bulb was working... took car for retest, bulb not working.

Pulled it out and fiddled with the bulb and it came on... then went off again... pulled it all apart and the bulbholder had partially corroded pins. So replaced the holder and the bulb.

Also found out where the water was getting in, the cover is coming away from the backplate on one side.

So I'll ebay a pair of new ones.

I changed my lenses from Orange to crystal non frosted ones purely as some twat in an audi smashed my drivers side one but I digress. I slipped a bank card in the top between the wing and lens, pushing down and outwards it should be enough to pop the lens out. I replaced my orange 501 bulbs with smd x5 led bulbs and found the refitting easier as you insert the bottom first and clip the top in. Hope this helps. Oh don't let the wiring fall back into the wing I should imagine it's a sod to relocate and get back out
