Just said i'd add to this to help anybody hearing a hum from a wheel at higher speeds (40mph +). I followed the haynes manual diagnosis for wheel bearing issues which recommended jacking up and rocking the wheel from 12 O' clock and 6 O' clock. This caused me to identify a wheel that was making no noise as the faulty one. When i replaced the hub and realised this made no difference i noticed the caliper on the other side was beginning to stick and put the noise down to that.
Actually turned out to be the bearing making the noise and caliper coincidentally sticking at the same time. Odd thing was, no play in the bearing that was making noise and play in a bearing that was making no noise!
The best way i can recommend to determine where the noise is coming from is by loading weight in a turn to the opposite side and see does the noise stop. I hope this saves somebody else the time I wasted fiddling with this.
