Knocking when letting clutch out and between gear changes 1st up to 3rd?

Hi guys I'm new to the forum and would appreciate your views/ help on this problem.

Recently bought this car off someone I know, it's done 50k miles and has been serviced regularly. I recently went to service it myself and upon removing the bottom engine cover I discovered oil all over the bottom of the sump and bell housing - I cleaned it all off to try and find the source but couldn't - after running the car for a day I could then see it was coming from the bell housing. Thinking it was strange for a rear main seal to go on this age car I checked the engine oil level to discover the dipstick was high, so I dropped some oil out (half a litre) then run the car for for a week... Success, no oil. My assumption is oil must have been pushing past the seal as too much was in the sump.

Having solved this, I still have an annoying knock that is only apparent after driving after about 5-10 minutes and it's upon changin from 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd when you let out the clutch (more noticeable if the clutch is let out quicker) I can also hear the knocking when coasting to a stop and changing from 2nd -1st. Is there a know issue with the diff or drive shafts? It sounds like slack being taken up on something.

Thanks
Jason

Yep my 14 reg does exactly what you described and my old 11reg did the same ? Both 16 TDCI which I'm guessing yours is too ?
I'm a mechanic at a independant garage and noticed it on at least 2 customer cars as well ?
If you change gear really really carefully it dosnt do it and if it's any consolation mine never got worse in 40000 miles ?

Clearly the issue is the dual mass flywheel, though this is an old thread.

Dual mass improves gear changes and assists with very smooth drive take up.

It works by having two parts to the flywheel - different manufactures do it slightly different but basically they all operate the same.

Just imagine two round disks, one disk has slots the other pegs that protrude - the protruding disk fits into the slotted part - either side of the protrusions but set within the slotted part are very powerful springs - as you take up drive the springs cushion the take up - likewise when lifting off the throttle the springs on the other side cushion the overrun.

These springs wear - and sometimes break - when that happens there is a clunk as the two metal parts strike each other.

The ford system has a smaller internal disk and the second part is a larger disk - joined in a similar way to what I have described. simple but very effective - its just that they fail and they are expensive in comparison to a single flywheel - which only ever needs to be changed if the clutch wears to far and metal to metal contact takes place ruining the contact face

Hi Glyn
It could quite well be the dmf! But the noise I've heard is very light and unlike any dmf I've heard ?
we change a lot of them and I do mean A lot
Especially Vauxhalls/saabs fitted with the Fiat diesel, we do at least one a week and they do make a hell of a noise .
I spoke to the LUK rep when he was round once and said they hadn't any know issues with the TDCI but he would wouldn't he lol

Sorry Paul, I wasn't trying to teach you to suck eggs - clearly you have an understanding of the mechanics of a car. (I sort of speed read and didn't pick up on the fact you are a mechanic)

I've found when its a light knock or somewhat of a rattle its usually a broken spring in the DMF, agree with your comment about continuing to drive it - just annoying rather than something that needs the car to be looked at urgently, once the damage is done to a DMF then may as well use it until a clutch change is needed and all parts changed at the same time - just turn up the radio a bit.

You hit the nail on the head with its more annoying than serious.
It could quite well be the Dmf but it sounds more like play/backlash in a CV or the box.
Funny thing is today our local dent master guy came round in exactly the same car as mine I mentioned the noise and enquired if his did it too ? To which he replied he'd never noticed it !
He returned later in the day and stomped straight over to me in the Mot bay and said that now I'd mentioned it ,His did it too He wasn't happy about it either ?
What's that old saying "don't think about a red balloon " and what are you now thinking about
Cheers Paul
