Replacing Starter Motor

My DMF is failing and I believe has killed my starter motor. After entering my Reg i bought a replacement from euro car parts. This evening I took the old one out and the electrical terminals are different. On the original one there were 3 studs and on this new one only 2. Is it possible to use the new one (by altering the wiring slightly) or should I just take it back and find the exact match.
Thanks.

James

Ps I plan (with considerable help) to do the dmf/clutch in the next few weeks. Should the motor hold out that long?

My wifes car had starter issues when the DMF was failing.

I removed the starter cleaned out the pinion area and refitted it.

It ran fine for a month untill I had time to replace the DMF.

It was cleaned agian while the DMF was being replaced.

It is still going fine 4 years and 50,000 miles later.

Its not a ground stud is it? Looks like the feed to the solenoid to power the solenoid

from the ignition switch.

Yes I believe that's what it is, why wouldn't it have the stud? I will take back to euros and source an exact match.
I did try that Gary but to no avail, all I get when I try to start is a loud click. I have the starter out, is it worth hard wiring to the battery to make sure it isn't something else?

Been snapped off in transit? Or it was snapped off previously and not noticed

when reconditioned?

With a set of jump leads or heavy cable, connect an earth to the starter body

and a live to the part where the stud should be and see if the solenoid clicks.

With 2 main studs what triggers the solenoid?

Replaced, still won't start. I'm starting to think the dmf has failed. The mrs drove it last and parked it up...could it have failed as the engine was turned off, unless the clutch is depressed this is usually a clunky affair.
I did try bump starting it with the AA and I thought the engine turned freely but maybe I'm wrong. I've just let it roll down the drive a bit and dropped the clutch seems to stop pretty instantly.

Check for 12v+ at the starter motor and check to see if that 3rd lug gets power

when cranking.

A bulb will work just as well the rectangular bulbs from the interior lights work well.

Just be careful not to short anything, but that applies to test meters also.

So 14 months on I got the uncle round to have another play with the Mondy tonight. There is no battery in it so was using a jump pack to get ignition. Still the single click from the starter. Got a socket on the flywheel and turned the engine over okay. Uncle asked for a long bar, gave the starter a whack while i turned the key and hey presto started instantly....she lives (for now). Might get a battery for it now.
