Hi all on way to work a 3am this morning for a 20mile drive with between quarter and half a tank normal run but noticed the fuel going down quickly so put it in miles remaining and it was dropping 1 mile about every 10 seconds at 70mph I started with 189 miles in tank and got there with 87 left is this a regen or is there another problem I had a look see if anything was leaking but couldn't see anything
Thanks all

Mine does this if I've been parked on a slope (even a slight one), dist to empty varies a lot. When its been really low its actually dropped to 0 when I've been on the way to the petrol station... kept running though  was crapping my pants in case it was going to cut out!

After driving for a while on a level-ish road it usually sorts itself out eventually. Best way to check if its doing a regen is to check the instant fuel consumption. If its regenning it will go up to 0.4-0.5gal/h on idle.

Hi had all ready been driving for 15 mins and was cruising on the motorway before it started happening I didn't look at the instant mpg was just looking at the range left as it was dropping so quickly and you could see the fuel gauge just dropping

I find that it can take a while to settle. Was your car parked on a slope when you read the gauge this morning? which way was it facing?

I always find if the car's parked facing up a slope when I come back to start it the distance to empty reduces a lot, but upon hitting a downhill section/after a while of running it will settle down again. Parking facing downhill it increases a little bit but not by the same factor.

My wife's Fiesta doesn't do it, its rock steady.

No I got home last night and it was reading 190 miles about the same as I started it this morning it just started dropping halfway through the journey I've finished work now and the Car's been parked in the flat all day so will see what it's like on way home another point is I have only done 200 miles out of £50 worth of diesel so with only 89 miles left I think it's either used it or lost it

What's the fuel guage reading? Have you used/lost fuel?

Ok so totally confused now got back to the car and this met me Vehicle Car Speedometer Motor vehicle Automotive design

When I left the car the actual fuel gauge was nearly in the red on the run home the miles remaining slowly crept up to 92 I stopped to get food near home started back up then this was reading
Land vehicle Vehicle Car Automotive design Personal luxury car

I did notice though half way home the instant mpg dropped and when I stopped at a set of lights it was reading 0.4 on tick over possible regen? Could it have been getting ready to do a regen on way to work?

Only thing I can think of is the car's been parked on a slight incline. Either that or there's a gremlin hiding in your sender

Mine does it on my drive, it's not even a noticeable incline but it's enough to throw it off.

0.4Gal/h sounds like it's been doing a regen.

Mine did it this morning.

Got home last night - 70 miles left in tank.

Got in this morning - 50 left.

15 minutes later arriving at work there was 64 left.

Kind of a fun game, "guess what's left in the tank", lol

How far is it to work? 4 miles?
Mike. You'll know your car is doing a regen coz it'll sound rough. You may even see a puff of white smoke exiting the exhaust.
As for your apparent loss of fuel. Have you seen any leaks?
Find someone to do a fuel system pressure test.
Personally I don't pay attention to the how many miles left. I just look at the gauge and when it's near the red I fill up.

Sounds reasonable to me (LOL)
That's what I do but on the way to work a 20 mile run the actual gauge went from between quarter and half to near red the when got back to the car it was to to between quarter and half it was literally going down that quickly I thought I had a leak or hole in the tank and did check for signs of leaking but nothing then to return to the car and everything back to where it should be makes me think the fuel sender had s funny
