Vibration Fix (picture inc.) - moderate acceleration 1500-2000 RPM

After years of having an annoying vibration while accelerating I jacked up the motor and found the little bugger.

I have tried to find out the details of the fix on this forum but could not find it. Also read there was (is?) a Ford Technical Bulletin on it but wanted a homebrew fix...

After scratching my head for a while I finally found it.

So to share this info take a look at the picture, this was taken under the engine bay, N/S/F forward looking. The problem with vibration is with the intake pipe hitting the front lower crossmember. I had already removed the rubber hose and a clamp over the top on the pipe.

I stuffed some foam between the pipe and chassis (as arrowed) and have not had the vibration since. Its amazing how much nicer my TDCI is to drive!

Roger.

well done for finding the problem, from the picture i can see the routing is different on the tdci compared to the tddi although you would think perhaps the same? i think it is to do with the egr location I.E. if the egr is front left (while looking at engine from front of car) it would have different pipe routing as apposed to one at the rear right which i have on my tddi. Also hence the tddi does not have this issue.

the intercooler routing is the same as the tdci and that pic could be either...or at least the same as the last one i looked under '02 version. Not needed to get underneath mine yet!

Many thanks for this fix. I have a vibration noise you describe at 1500-2000 rpm, and, as a taxi driver, find it embarrassing with passengers, to the extent that i try to accelerate through this noise !!
There was a TSB for this (bracket mod) although Ford want money to do.
I have fiited some foam this afternoon and will report findings....

I have a vibration/rattle noise at low revs or when in a high gear but going slow and I thought it was the thin metal cowling that went over the exhaust underneath the gear shift (heat shield) but will try this as well.

I know it a bit of thread necro, but i've just done this bodge on my car and it's made one hell of a difference. As well as killing the annoying main vibration it's quietened the car down a fair bit across the board. I never thought it was noisey before (vibration excluded), but it's bordering on refined now :) :driving:

Thanks for the bodge!

Missed this first time round as I bought my TDCI after this can only say well done to ramjet666 for finding this out.

Just a quick question what pipe is this and does it have to be removed to fit foam or can you just push it underneath as it is?

Cheers

Paul

Wanted to say thank you for the original poster for the photo and fix - I managed to do the same fix with a bit of foam pipe lagging tonight and that awful drone / buzzing vibration has vanished. The picture helped a lot - I just drove the N/S wheel onto a brick, which gave just enough room for me to slide underneath!

Now I've got a creaking sound I have to fix, seems to be related to road bumps and steering, the noise seems to come from the dash or bulkhead area, AFAICT :ponder:

"They do that Sir".

IIRC, you've got to strip down, remove, re-grease and re-fit the bottom steering column universal joint.

:L :L :woot: That has been the single thing than made me mad in my car, I posted two time for a solution and there it is. YOU ARE THE MASTER :first: . I will try it during the weekend, under which wheel is this pipe?

Finally got round to doing it and vibration gone. Hooray what a difference! Only thing is, the engine 'clack' seems to be louder now. Possibly due to the splashguard still being off? Does it provide sound insulation does anyone know :driving:
