I have had a search but no answers.

I have EATC and usually have it set to auto.
I have flicked it to Econ as a test to see if I have better MPG.

My question is about whether the econ is still running air con or whether is like a car without aircon in that its just running the fans.

When my other Mondeo had the gas run out a few years ago, it went for a recharge and the condensor had dried out seals because the unit wasn't being run.
So i wnt to know if running it in econ mode potentially dry any seals out? If that all makes sense?

Also, have anyone got any figures on how much mpg is affected by having air con on?

ECON mode basically is as you assume.

the system tries to keep the set temp without using the AC

the seals will only dry out if you just dont use the AC but if you use it for about 15-20 mins a month then the seals should be fine even when using ECON mode 99.9% of the time so if ur on the motorway cruising for example, use the AC for abit just to keep the seals suitably conditioned with minimal MPG loss

Ok, thank you, this is kind of what I was thinking, or hoping.

I shall keep an eye on my mpg and see if it makes a difference over the next tankfull.
So far appears to be showing me having used less but wont know until the thing is full up.

mpg is mainly affected on short journeys with aircon on longer ones it doesnt really make a difference in my experience. i hate climate though wish they would give me the option to just blow a constant warm temperature but no they have to be awkward

you should be able to have it blowing constant HOT air TG, whenever mine is in manual fan speed mode it will blow out air at the pre-set level only ( so 22 if thats what your set at or if set to HIGH then it will come out @ whatever temp it reaches as it passes through the heater matrix at the set fan speed ), it does not alter the output to keep the interior @ said display temp when in manual mode ( it basically ignores the cabin temp & sunload sensors when in manual fan speed mode & then the output air temp when set at either LOW or HIGH in that mode ).

if you have it in AUTO or ECO AUTO if you have the MAX button control panel ( ie you switch OFF the AC & auto goes off the screen but remains in auto mode ) or a facelift mota then you are stuck with it altering the air temps & fan speed to keep the car at the set temp.

now back on topic

as TG said, round town work will generally be more fuel hungry if using AC ( not as much with the mk3 mondy as previous mondies used to be but still a tad more hungry ) but if ur cruising on the motorway or D.C then there is little to no difference in the MPG as there is less load on the engine & its does not have to work as hard to run the AC either so tis better to have ur AC on than the windows down when above say 50mph etc.

if i set it at a temp it blows warm/hot when it reaches that temp it blows cold which is annoying thats manual mode too

This is interesting.
Funny how I have had the car for 7-8 years and never fiddled with it.

In terms of MPG, on my usual to and from work (Loughborough to Leicester, 12.5 miles) when the needle shows 1/2 full on the tank I would normally have covered about 240-250 miles, this time I have covered 290 miles from the 1/2 tank.

I normally get around 470-490 miles per tank which equates to around 36-39 mpg.
I have done 340 so far and trip reckon another 230 (total of 570 max). so if I get get 540-550 from the tank = 41-42 mpg, based on 13 galls.
I can get 44 on a long run with AC, so be interesting to see if I get much more on my next long run.

Interesting as I say..... I do love my air con though....

so did a fill up tonight.
works out at 40.5 mpg.
up from 36-37 usually. So around 10%. Will see what difference is made on a long journey and try to report back.

So, I said I would report back, 7 months later :whistling: .

So on a long run, which i have done quite a few times, and am confident in my findings, the economy is now at 47-48 where it used to be about 43-44. This is a long trip down to Essex with a little bit of driving down there. About 400 miles overall.
This has been done using fill-up to fill-up on the fuel.

10% saving.

So there, Quod Erat Demonstradum.
