Where To Find A 2.2Tdci Exhaust?

The exhaust on my 1.8TDCi is dead.
Fancy a twin exhaust like the 2.2 has. As far a I can tell the 2.0 and 1.8 exhaust systems are the same and I would have thought the 2.2 system would be directly interchangeable also.

I've had a look on ebay to no avail, I don't really want to go to ford and there's nothing on the euro car parts website.
Anyone know if the best place to try pick a full 2.2 system up?

Hi there,

Depending on where your 1.8 exhaust has given up, you can get the duplex system from the new Volvo V70 (the R-system). It will fit the Mk4/4.5 Mondeo from the rear axel and back. It looks better and sounds a bit better than the standard 2.2 system.
Look in my tonics, I did the swop on my 1.8TDCi ;-)

Cheers from

Its funny you should ask as I have a 2.2 Titx Sport and out of curiosity I decided to try and source them. I rung just about every motor factor and exhaust supplier and none of them could supply me with one. The only place I could find it was ford and at £256 a side its certainly not cheap. You can have them made up at a specialist for about £500 and they would be stainless steel.

After exchanging a few PM's with the Dane I think I'm going to go for the 1.8TDCi centre section from ford with the modified Volvo V70 R rear end.

From what I understand ANY Mondeo/S-Max/Galaxy/Volvo V70 exhaust after the rear axle will go straight onto the centre section.

I will get prices this week and decide weather or not I will be going for a stainless system.

Looked on Ebay and the exhaust pipes don't look like they have the same diameter as the standard system and the back box looks of a much poorer quality.

Been to ford and Volvo today.

Centre section for the 1.8TDCi is £99+vat.
Rear back boxes for the 2.2TDCi is £264+vat PER SIDE!

Went to Volvo and the back boxes are £266+vat for both of them.

Looking at £438 including vat all in.

Going to get some more prices for a full stainless system before I go for it but I would like it all FoMoCo stamped.

When reading The Dane's thread on this a while back, I understood the Volvo ones were FoMoCo stamped right out of the box,
just like the Jaguar gear knob I bought as a replacement for my broken one (which by the way is identical to the original Ford one, bar not being broken).

For those attempting a DIY duplex exhuast the details are as follows.

1.8TDCi/2.2TDCi Hybrid

1.8TDCi centre section - 1460214 (£99.43+VAT)
2.2TDCi R/H Silencer - 1810613 (£227.83+VAT)
2.2TDCi L/H Silencer - 1813000 (£203.89+VAT)
Exhaust Rubbers - 1368629 (£3.89+VAT)
Gasket - 1316608 (£3.29+VAT)

Total incVAT £660.01

1.8TDCi/Volvo V70 Hybrid

1.8TDCi centre section - 1460214 (£99.43+VAT)
Volvo V70 Duplex Exhaust silencers - Volvo PTNo. 31269693 (£266+VAT)
Exhaust Rubbers - 1368629 (£3.89+VAT)
Gasket - 1316608 (£3.29+VAT)

Total IncVAT £447.13

My main aim is to reduce back pressure and improve spool up time.
As I can get a full custom built single exit system for £350 and a Duplex system for £450 I don't think it makes any economic sense for me to persue this option any further.
I would like to Thank The Dane for all the information though!

The basic rule is the centre section has to be the right one for your engine. The silencers can come off any other engined Mondeo/V70/S-Max/Galaxy etc.

I'm always wary of the universal box places, none of them are designed for the car, how can they be right?

Far from Universal! The place I'l be using even makes their own silencers!
You choose the sound you want, choose the tailpipe and they build the system around your specifications.

Manafacturers have to come to a compromise between sound, back pressure and emmisions.

By going custom I will be having my CAT gutted rather than removed as I still want it visible and the exhuast will be 2.5" diameter from the Cat back which will finish with an unrestrictive back box.
I'm not too worried about noise as long as it dosen't drone. Diesels are generally quiet anyway!

Only thing I'm worried about is the tailpipe. I don't know weather to go for a single tailpipe on one side around 2.5" inwardly rolled or a twin tailpipe which is staggered to match the curve of the bumper.

Ontop of that as it will be made out of stainless steel, I don't have to worry about having to replace it again in another 4 years!

I'm going to a company in Cardiff called Prospeed. Probably not as cheap as the franchises like Longlife and Powerflow but had some work done by him on my Focus and seen his work on other cars and it's second to none! I tend to feel a little more thought is put into the systems too, I tend to think they are just slapped together in Longlife or Powerflow.

Just having a look at tailpipes. Thinking of going for the TX083L and having the 'stagger' so it's flush with the bottom of the bumper as it curves around.

Had a quick look underneath my car last night, hangers look like they'll fail before the box although the pipe towards the middle section is tatty too.

Thanks to bailes for part numbers and prices, if required the Volvo boxes are the ones to go for.

I have one up for grabs if your still interested?

FWIW Ford exhausts are made of Stainless steel. OK, maybe not T304, but more likely T409, which is a little easier to weld etc.

It is strange that your exhaust has gone though. Is it a low mileage/town car?

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I was under the car today as it was having its mot and guess what, my exhaust has failed at the hanger.

Anyway, I just wanted to point out that both myself and my mechanic (he's also an exhaust builder) dont think the oem exhaust its stainless steel. It appears to be coated mild steel. The giveaway being the corrosion on the pipe seam and how strongly the magnet reacts to it.

Just done the twin exhaust on my Mondeo.

My original plan was to fit a new center section from Ford and the Volvo back boxes,so I ordered them both.

when the Volvo parts arrived they provided two sleeve clamps, one to connect the back boxes together and one to join to the center section.

Now my center section was ok so though if I could save this and send the Ford Part back and I would save some money.

I had already bought a new gasket in anticipation of fitting a center section so I undid the center from the cat and cut the back end just behind the sub frame to give me abit of leeway for the right length.

I put the new center section on top of the old one and marked where to make the final cut to get the exact length.

once that was done it was just a case of fitting it all together.

One more thing, I order a new lower bumper trim with the two cut outs for the tail pipes. The part number for this is 1722090.

Hope this helps if some one is thinking of doing the same thing.

I know that this is an old thread, but just to let anyone know that is thinking of doing this that the Volvo exhaust is now £362.62 for a new one and it's an order only part which is 4-8 weeks
