I'm having trouble with my 60 plate 163 in that it keeps trying to do a Regen on the DPF but never seems to do it. I've driven up and down A roads and motorways but the fans always running when I switch it off even after an hours driving at 2500 rpm. It's a powershift so I've been using it in manual mode with the cruise control on to keep the revs up but it's still not doing it. I can tell when it's trying because the auto gear changes become jerky and it's hesitant when pulling away. I've ordered a modified cable off eBay to force a static Regen and wondered if anyone has done it before and what the procedure is? I had a cable before with my mk3 because I changed the injectors and needed to recode the new ones so I should be ok but I recall that when you read the codes on the mk3 the engine cut out if it was running. I know that the engine/exhaust needs to be up to temperature and at least 20 litres of fuel in the tank to do a Regen. Do you have the engine running when you tick the force Regen option or tick it then start the car? I've tried adding forte DPF cleaner before I drove to Wales and back this weekend from Nottingham but it's still playing up. It only started behaving when the fuel dropped to a quarter of a tank and it drove perfect after that-less than 20 litres.
Hi I use this I use for scan option not available in elm but the elm device should be modified your engine temp needs to be above a Sheraton temp before it will allow you to do this
The minimum engine temp is 65C and during DPF regen make sure, that nothing flammable is under the car as exhaust system gets very hot. The regen itself takes few minutes and rest of the time goes for cooling.
Hi i had the same on my 2009 2.2, its not that it needs the regen otherwise you would have got towed home from wales. What it was on mine was the rubber sensor hoses from the dpf run up to a señsor block hidden under the shielding the block was defective and one of the rubber hoses had a perforation, therefore it was not accurately measuring the gas pressure in and out. the sensor was screwed on the pressure out side so the sensor kept telling the pcm to initiate a regen cos the sensor was saying the dpf was 45% full when it wasn't . Replaced the pipe and sensor all good for the next 200 thousand miles. good luck .
Well I've been out tonight for about 20 minutes in it and I've pulled up outside the house and the engine fans ran on for a minute after I switched off. I've only got about 1/8 th of a tank of fuel in so it shouldn't be trying to regen now unless like you say there's a hose split on the DPF.
Get yourself an OBD2 reader and a copy of Forscan. You can pull up when a DPF regen was last done, the average mileage between DPF regens and how many failed attempts there have been.
You can also force a DPF regen using Forscan. I havn't tried it myself but the option is there.
EDIT: You can also see the pressure difference in kPa before and after the DPF. Mine shows as <2kPa. If it's higher your DPF is getting blocked.
Sorry, bit of a late reply. Any cable will do, you don't need a modified one to read those values. I can pull them with a bog standard £6 bluetooth OBD2 adapter.
Doesn't the fan kick in if the engine is hot normally? Especially if you have been revving it high at motorway speeds on cruise. With or without a regen, the fan will run(This is just one symptom of the regen) Since the weather has been over 20 degrees mine has stayed on for 30secs after the engine is off too cool even if just spirited driving upto 3k revs. I don't worry about the regen and let it do it's job. As said if worried get it all checked out on OBD2 but I suspect you will find it is normal.
I find the fan seldom comes on in my 2.0 tdci. Had the engine idling for 40 min and an additional 10 min at 2krpm when I did my oil flush and change with not even a peep from the fan. Active grille stayed shut too.
I've also never noticed it when pulling up from commuting. I do 40 miles down the M42/A42.
Inly time I've heard the fan was for the first month or two of ownership where it seemed to be doing a regeneration every 400 miles for 10 min+ at a time. If I heard the fan still on I'd stick my lockable bollard up at the entrance to my drive and leave it running while I made a cup of tea.
Since using Cataclean and premium diesel I've not noticed a regeneration for the last 3-4 months.

How do you access this information? I can't find this info using Forscan 2.1.18b. I have a modified ELM327 reader and Forrscan works like a charm otherwise.

Best regards,

I have just purchased a modified ELM327 and a copy of forscan, How do i get to the screen regarding when the last regen was done.
I really wouldn't perform a forced regen with a cheap aftermarket tool, I don't know the software but it usually doesn't have the necessary parameters in place to carry out a regen safely...
Plus the regen should only be carried out after a good look at the car and DPF data to determine the cause.
For MK4, you can see at least calculated soot mass (in grams), there are two or three banks for that (named SPDF or alike). In addition, there is a bank showing the amount of fuel consumed since the latest reset of the values (at least that's how I have understood the bank, it's named something like "fuel amount after latest clean" or something).
Furthermore, there are temperature values for the cat as well as the dpf.
