The vacuum system for the brakebooster is connected to the inlet-plenum, the inlet-pipe and the vacuum pump.
When the engine is off-throttle , there is vacuum in the plenum.
But when you put your foot down, there is boost in the plenum...... But at the same time there is vacuum at the inlet-pipe connector. So that is the backup, so to speak.
If you brake; 99,9% of the time you don't have your foot on the gas-pedal anymore , so there is always enough vacuum for the brake booster.
The vacuum pump is a backup for the backup.
Focus ST's don't have it, Focus RS doesn't even has the inlet-pipe connection, only the plenum.
Volvo removed the vacuum pump for the later s40's and v50's.
JWR removed the pump from his mondeo and never noticed any difference.
My mate disconnected the pump in his S40 because of the noise it made (broken).
So what does the pump do?..... It sucks!
