i think im becoming obsessed with doing things differently! ;l but can someone tell me how i can wire these so that:
the drivers one comes on when the drivers door is opened only,
the passenger one comes on when the passenger door is opened only,
they go out as soon as the door is shut (ie no delay),
opening the rear doors does nothing.
i did a search and there was a discussion about this before with promise of a how-to, but i cant find one.
looking at the wiring diagram, it would seem to be just a matter of tapping into the door switch wiring? if its too difficult or requires too much destruction of the car, i will just do them the normal way.
It's not that simple without a bit of electronic. Three of the door switches are connected together. You would need to diode OR then together so that they still trigger the alarm etc but act seperately for the footwell lamps. Even better if you have rear lamps aswell
I like it that way, when I go to work, usually around 0100-0300, I open the car by the passenger door and put my bag, folders etc on the seat and in the footwell (cos it's closer to the house and its easier with the neighbours motor being next to the drivers door so I don't have to worry about trying to squeeze me and my bag etc through a small gap) and when I get out at the other side I can see where everything is so I don't miss anything and leave it behind....if it was my maps I'd be well [censored] off and lost :L

The 3 door switches connect together in the dash loom. You can access the switches at the connectors behind the kick panel in the drivers footwell and above the fuse box behind the glove box.
ive been having a look at this today. the haynes wiring diagram shows a white/green wire and a white/red wire coming from the door switches to the central timer module. i was expecting to find the wires connecting under the central timer unit in the same area as the interior light wiring, but theyre not there. :? in fact i couldnt find them at all, in any of the connectors in or above the fusebox (so many wires to look at ). can anyone tell me exactly where they are. i would prefer to do any modifications in the fusebox area if possible. thanks.
christ m8, how did you find all this out. seems ive been wasting my time looking at haynes manual. im probably being very thick here, but why does the LH front door go to drivers kick panel, when LH rear goes to fusebox? is the LH rear the only one accessible at the fusebox? i thought all the passenger doors were linked, with the drivers door having its own wiring. so doesnt drivers door go to fusebox (and timer) on its own? :?
anyhow, thanks for the info - its problably saved me hours of messing around. im beginning to think this isnt going to be worth all the effort , but i might have another look tomorrow. cheers.
The order of the wiring does seem a bit odd. The drivers door is seperatate to run the headlight chime. The three other doors link once they get into the dash loom. Thats why you need to intercept them before they reach the dash loom.

the door OPEN wires for all doors except the drivers link into one wire and the drivers door is another wire. Door AJAR wires there are one for each door and they connect to the alarm. If you have an AWS floor loom then the wires also go into the drivers kickpannel and connect to the dash loom for the AWS
so is the door AJAR and door OPEN function part of the same switch? i have only noticed the one switch per door, on the pillar near the door latch (not near the hinges), which i assumed was the OPEN switch. if the OPEN and AJAR wiring is separate as you say, this would be good because i wont be interfering with the operation of the alarm system, which is something else i was worried about.
my car doesnt have AWS, so i guess wont have the AWS loom, but will it still deffo have AJAR switches & wiring, for the alarm?
Door open and door ajar switches are all one and the same switch. The alarm doesn't care which door is open. It just wants to see a trigger. As I said above, the drivers door is the only special case because of the headlight on chime.
The Mk2 AWS later type takes the four door wires into the AWS then the AWS signals the alarm and the timer module. The earlier one was different in that the four door wires go inividually to the AWS and alarm module simutainiously with no connection between the AWS and alarm module. The later non AWS car link the 3 doors so one wire goes to the alarm and timer module. The drivers door goes directly to the alarm module plus a seperate input to the timer module. Now Left hand drive cars seem to wired completely different again :? :whatever:
this is enough to blow yer head! this is what i wanted to do:
1. link earth side of drivers footwell light to drivers door switch wire, which i was hoping to find at fusebox area.
2. isolate front passenger door switch wire from rear doors switch wiring with a diode, so it will still work interior light and alarm, but not be earthed by the rear door switches when they are operated. the theory of this is quite straightforward. this i why i want to find where the front passenger door switch wiring joins the rear doors switch wiring. i was hoping this would be somewhere easily accessible like the fusebox.
3. link earth side of passenger footwell light to front passenger door switch wire, but between diode and switch, so that it only lights when front passenger door switch is operated. i was hoping this point would not be too far away from the fusebox area.
now i'm a bit :? by the previous posts as to where the wires join, bearing in mind mine is a 1997 mk2 without AWS.
i dont think im going to sleep too well tonite...
This is the plug you need, black/green wire = passenger, black/red wire = driver
I think they connect to earth when open so 12v will be flowing through the wire, if you simply splice in the 12v wire of the foot well light to the correct wire then it should only come on when that door is open. The footwell lights are only connected to earth when one of the doors opens but that doesnt matter since the 12v supply is now switched too.
cheers beany m8, youre a good bloke. where did you get that diagram from? ive been struggling with the haynes manual circuit diagrams, they dont bear much relation to reality. i wish i could find something better. :L
