Firstly, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question, so apologies if not; if I have got it wrong, perhaps the moderator would move it to the right place and let me know?

I have, as mentioned above, a 1993 Granada Ghia 2.9 Estate. My problem is that the heater doesn't seem to be working properly. When the car is going at anything less than motorway speeds, it does seem to give out some heat; in fact, the slower the car is moving, the more heat it produces, so that if you just leave the car stationary with the engine ticking over, it will get very warm indeed inside the car! However, as soon as you get up to 70mph, it goes virtually stone cold. A friend of mine has tried putting a citric acid flush into the cooling system, and since then ( about a week ago ) I've done about 220 miles in the car with no appreciable difference to the problem. Any suggestions would be welcomed!

I don't no but if it comes up you need a new heater matrix, i have a scorpio ultima i am breaking and it may have the correct part you require.

I will leave it for you to find out.

Thanks for the offer, and I'll certainly bear it in mind if it comes to that ( although I'm hoping it won't! ). I don't know offhand whether the matrix is the same, but maybe someone else could enlighten me, just in case the need does arise. If there are any other suggestions as to what the problem might be, they'd be very welcome too!

I've had a few 2.9's over the years in both Granada and Sierra form, had this problem more than once and it was always the heater matrix at fault. If I remember correctly you can try to flush the matrix out by disconnecting the hoses and reverse flushing with a hose pipe, this should clear a lot of rubbish out and may help. If not then a replacement matrix is needed, but they are a right pain to fit! Correct procedure involves taking half the dash out, although I know some people have done it without taking the dash out but space is very tight.

Thanks for that; in actual fact, in the seven months since I first posted the problem, I've tried an assortment of things of which that was one. To be honest, whether or not it was in fact the reverse-flush that solved the problem or something else that I did, I'm not altogether sure; although of course there's a certain irony in the fact that I'm posting this reply on what is arguably the hottest day so far this year! As a matter of interest, both before and ( more noticeably ) since the heater's started working properly again, I've realised that it seems to be putting out hot ( or at least warm ) air even when the heater is set to 'cold'. If you've any thoughts about that one ...!

That's a difficult one, but if you're not getting the temperature range you were expecting I would think the heater matrix is still blocked a bit. I found that although you can get an improvement by flushing it through, the only way to get it back to how it used to be would be to fit a new matrix

Hi i wonder if anybody can help, im new to the forum and own a MK3 Grannada Scorpio Cosworth 24V, I have recently discovered that my heater matrix does not blow hot or cold aor any air for that matter, any tips, i can turn all the knobs but nothing. im new to Ford and have am scratching my head about this one. The only thing i can comment is the previus owner has removed the air con motor, he says because it didnt work and as the car was garaged and used as a nd when it never bothered him.

any advice appreciated

Not really sure about that one I'm afraid, if nothing is coming out on any of the speed fan settings I would think the fan itself is not running, either due to a faulty fan or no power getting there. I'd check the fuse first and then look at the actual fan itself. Not sure where it is though, might be tricky to get to.

Pretty rare to have a 24v Granada now, there's not many left. Current records show 508 in existence, of which only 233 are currently taxed and on the road. I've got one of the SORN ones, it's been sitting in my garage for the last 3 1/2 years after it developed a bad oil leak onto the alternator. One day I hope to get it back on the road. Was an amazing car and so undervalued, made me smile every time I drove it.
