S-Max Acceleration Judder

2007 S-Max 1.8d Titanium. The car seems to of developed a problem with acceleration. Doesn't happen all the time (mainly when the wife is driving) but when I accelerate the revs go up and then it almost flatlines, doesn't go any more and then develops a judder. I have to release the pedal and slowly increase pressure. It is definitively not a a problem with cold engine as it even does this after an hour of driving but seems a little better. When the engine is warm the judder is there but seems to be when your at higher revs. It's now at the point where I cant trust the car to overtake. I'm about to take the car in for a full service but would prefer to give the garage an indication of what it could be. Could it be a fuel, air or oil filter????? Can anyone help, thanks.

Could be an eCU map issue, I've heard of this before.
If my memory serves me correctly, it's something to do with the car being a single engine turbo (whereas in other manufacturers using this engine it's a twin turbo) and to compensate, Ford tweaked the map, badly. I'm 95% certain Ford can update the ECU map for you and it will sort this out. If you're taking it to Ford for a service, then it's well worth mentioning this.

Thanks very much for that. I'll be taking it to an independant garage but they seem to think they can do what Ford can do. I'm crossing my fingers..
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

thanks will do. the garage is saying something about reinjecting unspent fuel...?
Its booking in on the 20th so I'll see what comes back... The car is behaving like a dog when hitting 2500 revs...... no confidence in overtaking.

A blocked fuel and air filter wouldnt of helped. That and a hole the size of a golf ball in the exhaust wouldn't of helped. Now I have to make sure I dont hit 88mph as this thing flies. thanks for your help.
I guess kind of pbvious to check but i'm no mechanic.

Well, now you've mentioned the fuel filter, reading back upon your problem, that does make sense
Glad you've got it fixed, pretty cheap as well I hope.

Hi bedlar so this problem has now been resolved??? I too have a 07 plate 1.8 titanium smax and this has started to happen on my smax. Im taking my car into my local garage to be looked at on Monday. started to have similar issues as you when on the motorway and tried to overtake with a burst of acceleration and like you say judders and end up dropping down a few gears and reapplying pressure of the accelerator. So was it a fuel filter issue did the garage say ????
Thanks
Andy
Thanks

Hi I am new to using forums but here goes.
I have a 97 S Max diesel. It judders and flattens on heavy acceleration needing me to lift off the accelerator until to allow it to accelerate slowly. It runs fine when i do not try to accelerate hard, no different with hot or cold engine. Strangely it runs when when my tank is below a quarter full. Seems like the symptoms you had.
What was the actual cause and what needed doing to put it right, i used to have a go at my own engines, but i hardly recognise what's under the bonnet nowadays!

Yes all sorted. It was the fuel filter that was becoming increasingly blocked. I took it to a Ford garage they figured it out no problem.
The local garage i tried initially were ok but i doubt they had the analysis equipment necessary as they were guessing at trying a new fuel pump, which did not seem to fit with what i found when i drove it.
Hope this helps, DK53
