Holy crap. I hope my old Mk2 is not reading this from the great blacktop in the sky. I never had any of the issues above (except the self destructing bumpers, obviously, and they are only £30 of fleecebay).

Mine was on 86,000 and I did approx 8,000 in three years (normally ride a bike y'see). Only got rid 'cos it was hit when parked. I actually preferred it to my current Mk3.

no seriously, i find them quite boxy inside, like a volvo is on the outside. i also took into consideration parts availability, lack of dmf, and stick with what you know, (which technically means i should have a sierra or cortina).

I've been at the wheel of so called better cars and found many to have a worse turning circle than the mondy, mine will come round in 32 feet full lock. She's a mk1 with a mk2 rack on her.
Also get 330 miles to the tank around town, must add the fuel gauge below 1/4 tank gets very erratic so tend to refill a 1/4 rather than risk running out. Being stuck in wheelchair don 't help if needing to go to garage for quick can full, I did let it go once a few years back and had 490 on the trip meter, that was all around town including loading quite heavily due to moving.
In time i've had her she's had new bushes, droplinks all round. They are the only one's though.
The handbrake's a pain, seems a common problem!!
Not convinced by plastics inside nor the damn bumpers.
Really hate original fit lights they're too dim for today.
Had the fun of the subframe captive nuts, there's a post about it somewhere on here.

HI ALL,the only thing i hate about my i.8 glx mondeo is that its getting old, other than that its in good condition for the year 2 previous owners only 44,000 miles the last one was not very good at parking and it had a bad bumper scuff since repaired but noticable close up,its a lot better than my last car a mk3 mondeo!

yes i agree the mk 1 and mk2 mondeos have the best body shell design had a 2.5 ghia x mk3 for 12 months good car but it never did it for me so i waited till the best mk2 became avilable again and bought it in october last year paid 890 pounds but theres no rust and thats the main thing with a car this age.

I wouldn't say 'I hate', but rather annoying....

Turning circle - but you learn to live with it
Rear arches with a bit of rust
Fuel filler flap release does not always open - but I only put petrol in once a month
Standard 'late' mk2 V6 brakes - have ST170 setup with braided hoses now
      Subframe captive nuts
Drivers seat angle - changed the base for an electric one from a Ghia X so that I could tilt it back.

Wishbones - No problem here; replaced both once since new and they are still fine after 5 years (Genuine Ford parts)

This isn't a design cock up but more a mechanics balls up, but when they replaced the rear drop links they effectively gave the bushes a death sentence because they did not put a washer between the nut and the bush and instead wound the nut straight up into the bush and wrecked it. They don't look particularly old either. I now have to replace both rear drop links, or the bushes at the very least...not happy about that...Pretty sure it was Ford that replaced them...

presume you know about the 130hp mods? to take the 115 horses of a 1.8 and change to 130 horses, 2.0 maf housing, 2.0 throttle body, 2.0 cams and a 2.0 ecu

just the maf housing and throttle body should help a bit.

Hi siruncle, engine wise my previous 2.5 ghia x v6 mk 3 engine was fantastic the groan it made  when putting the foot down could not be beat, the only down side was it would drink petrol eg 20 to 25 miles to the gallon around town on a long run i would get 35 miles to the gallon which was not bad,but i never loved it like i did my old mk 2 it must be the body design the mark 2 mondeo has the best mondeo body design of them all.I thought about doing some modifications but have decided to keep my 1.8 glx in its original condition it still moves pretty quick when i want her to but my speeding days are long gone im more after reliability now and with a ford i think you carnt go wrong.

I don't like the fact that safety was not in high priority in production line of our mondys..

Have anyone ever try to unlock his mk2 with a mk1 key or the opposite?? It opens.. in LHD at least.

That makes me angry, it's unexceptable. I couldn't believe it and I didn't excepted it either to be happened, until I unlocked my mk2 with my mate's mk1 key.

98TD. 207,000 miles, 180,000 of them mine, never been inside the engine/gearbox apart from glowplugs.  Serviced properly.  Original hoses, turbo, clutch, cat.  I'm not heavy footed unless I want to be, so usually 550miles/tank; once got 720 after I accidentally filled up with Vpower....  Bizarrely, it seemd to be more economical with a trailer.  Must have been some aerodynamic effect.  Kept up with traffic easily except from the traffic light GP, where I never competed.  Just went past them at the next set by getting the timing right.

Didn't like turning circle, lack of visibility when reverse parking.  Changing bulbs in the headlight (did it twice) was a pain.  Gearchange was beginning to be a bit notchy.  Otherwise, I think it was the best vehicle I have ever owned.  It's gone because I'm a lazy bugger who washed it at the end of winter and before a service so it got galloping arch rot.

Missed a 90,000 mile V estate (that was literally showroom mint) by 20 minutes so I ended up with a 58 Mk IV.  It's more powerful but generally not as nice to drive.  It needs to last for the next 16 years to give me the same value as the Mk II.  Somehow I doubt it.

The mondeo's are very safe, when the Mk1 was launched it was one of the safest cars on the planet! it re wrote the rule book for the family car class, seat belt pre tensioners, anti submarine seats, side beams, abs, air bag, fuel cut off system when car is upside down ect, the Mk1 wrote the rule book and was one of Fords biggest steps in recent times.  The Mk2 was even safer.  Dont forget these cars are pretty old and compared to a Mk4 Mondeo yes thay are no where near as safe, but that's natural for the  times.

Yeah i agree there, i had an accident in my very first mk1. I hit a chrysler grand voyager i went right into the side of it, it pulled out in front of me, i was doing about 50 ( in a 60 ) and i hit it straight in the side on the big sliding door. The chrysler was a mess it just crumpled it span round and 2 tyres even came off the rims !! The mk1 mondy i was in only suffered from a cracked bumper and headlight and a little crease in the drivers wing. They are built like tanks.
