'New' used 03 TDI for the Summer holidays - great!

BUT on the way to France I had a repetitive fault on the motorways with the engine losing power and going into limp mode which would then resolve itself with turning on and off. The problem was pretty frequent on the way there, first time 2 hours into the journey. Not at all in the 2 weeks we were there, and only once on the whole way back.

It's hard to say but it might have been more frequent when pulling uphill and certainly only happened when on the motorway and at speed.

No fault code has shown up on any of these occasions as far as I can tell.

It has not done it once since we returned and nothing else is misbehaving.

Anyone got any [cheap] suggestions?

Could be your turbo clogging up and overboosting, although that would generally record a fault code. I find a tankful of high grade diesel, bp ultimate or shell v power, and a good motorway blast clears it for a while at least.

Uphill or at speed - both times when the turbo is working hard... if you mainly do town and/or start stop driving then its nearly 100% going to be overboost as a result of a seizing VNT mechanism. How are you reading the codes?
