Hi everyone, so here's my problem....
my R reg escort 1.6 lx has been stood for quite some time and the battery is dead. i tried jumping it but i just get clicks, the engine does try and turn over but there just doesn't seem to be enough power (I have even tried takinkg the power straight from my battery onto the other cars leads bypassing the battery all together. I can't bump start it as the brakes are locked.
1. How do i unlock the brakes
2. What should i be wary of (I know leaving a car without turning it over every once in a while can cause engine to seize) so how do i prevent this?
Also does the master key have to be all red, i have one with a red spot is that the master?
Thanks for answering, if you do!!!

Firstly Welcome to TalkFord !
You obviously need some fresh petrol in there as petrol left over time becomes as flammable as water, so if possible syphon off as much old fuel as you can and add some fresh, if possible disconnect the fuel line and start the pump running to clear the fuel lines.
If it won't start from a full battery then you need to get the engine turning, I have in the past got old cars running taking off the handbrake and using a chisel and hammer gently tapping the brakes, spraying the moving parts with WD40 (avoid the pads and discs) and then towing to speed while someone in the car tries bumping, sometimes it been the only way to start the car but it very rarely fails.
Failing that use a pipelet or funnel and remove each plug in turn pouring a little petrol in to each cylinder, refit the plugs and try starting again, it might be lumpy and smokey and cut out within a few seconds but once the fresh fuel makes it way through you should have it running.
You answered your own question, preventing it from seizing by starting it now and then and stop the brake siezing by leaving the handbrake off and the car in gear, use some petrol saver a few drops stops the petrol weaking as quick.
The key with the red tab is usually the master key afaik.
Hope that helps !

i'd remove the battery and put it on charge for a day. Then fit the battery in the car and try it once. Fresh fuel would be wise. If it doesn't start like that, put the jump leads on it using a running car, with a decent size engine, a few revs might be needed (about 1.5k) to get power output up a bit.
once its started it's then easier to do the brakes, but i usually do it like this, get someone in the car who can drive, and get them to put it in gear and try to pull off. (If it has steel rims, take the trims off first) then while the driver tries to pull off, smack the wheel with a lump hammer a few times, usually the car trying to move and the shock will free it off. (don't burn the clutch out doing it, just apply a little revs and find the point just beyond biting point). Repeat with each seized wheel.
