After a minor impact with a width restriction post a friends s max tdci cut out and wont restart ,message says engine fault ?do these cars have something like the old inertia switch to cut the fuel or engine in case of accident ?

yep, usually they are in the wheelwell or in the little panel on the outside of the footwell, the ford book should tell you exactly where.
