I've recently just bought an old 1998 MK 6 Escort as a bit of a "Hobby Car".
Something that me an my brother can mess about with and try to learn a bit about the mechanics.

What I'd like to know from anyone is, are there any problems that are common with this model that we should look out for?

I know its a very wide encompassing question, but any tips, pointers or words of wisdom are very welcome as we are by all accounts total newbs!

idle air control valve are prone to failure (located at the back of the inlet manifold)
Mass airflow sensors are prone to failure
they eat lower arms like they're going out of fashion
rust, particularly along the inner and outer sills, also the rear arches are prone to rusting
vacume leaks from the back of the throttle body

these are a few issues that have risen since my long escort ownership (4 in total), other things are just the general things to look out for, oil leaks, cambelt changes, service history etc

You can lead a fool to wisdom - But you can't make him think
