My GF has a Mk4 1.4 on a W plate. This cold morning when she switched on the ignition the speedo and fuel gauge needles both flipped to max and then settled back at zero. The trip reset itself too.

Is this a sign of impending destruction? If the instruments did self destruct would the car still be drivable?

More like a discharged battery.

Did the car start or not, if it did start check for a poor battery connection.

Another vote for the battery. With luck, it's just that the connections couldn't cope with the drain of a cold start. This will do all sorts of weird and wonderful things to the dashboard LCDs and lights. On mine, it also resets the stereo.

Fitted a new battery today. It seems the old one was indeed getting sluggish in this cold. There are markings on it suggesting it could be 12 years old!!!!

Time will tell but the engine turned over so fast today that I am confident this will sort stuff for the foreseeable. Cheers, Guys.
