I've got a question about the penalty points system in this country. I hold a full European driving license which allows my to drive permanently in this country until I reach 70. In my country we don't have a system with points. This means I only have a paper version of my license that looks like this.

So I wonder what happens if I get caught speeding over here? They can't put points on my license because that would mean I have to sent it somewhere and then I wouldn't be able to drive in the meanwhile. And it doesn't hold a place to "write" the points on like the UK version has.

Does this mean I found a loop hole and they can't give me points or am I thinking too wishfull. :)

I think to drive in the UK you'll need a UK licence cos really they cant put points on a foreign licence cos only the country that the licence is valid in can put points on it thats why if you drive abroad with a UK licence they cant put points on it and only give you a fine

Well http://www.direct.go...ence/DG_4022556 says:

Quote

Residents

A valid community licence issued on the strength of a driving test within the EC/EEA, will allow you to drive in GB for a set period. Alternatively, you can exchange your licence for a British licence.

Provided your licence remains valid you may drive in GB:

Car, motorcycle driving licence holders (ordinary driving licence):
  • until aged 70 or for three years after becoming resident, whichever is the longer period

So that means I don't have to exchange it, doesn't it?

It says until the age of 70 or after 3 years which ever is the longer period. So in that part I should be fine. Poland is in the list of the EU-countries so it's quite strange they got done, or it was a long time ago. I've got a feeling I'm on to something :)

Dices,
at the time of awarding points, the suggestion will be made to exchage the Polish licence for a UK licence.
If this is not done then points are put on a 'shadow licence' and must be declared to the UK insurance company - usual conditions, not declared = invalid insurance. Either way, the police & courts will have access to the existence of the points by a computer check.
