After my recent fun with the powersteering (still not done yet) I now have another prob:

Battery discharged after parking lights were left on the the freeze last week.

Jumped the car and was good for couple of days then batter light came on and the alternator started smoking.

I Guess this will need replacing too and poss a new battery.

What battery is best??

This one any good for the job??...

As long as it's silver calcium any price you are happy to pay is good. I'd get the alternator checked out before changing it.
If the battery has gone it may have been pulling too much charge off the alt or possibly shorting the alt out.

Handy to know that about the alternator - thanks!
Ive just been reading that cars with a lead calcium battery should not have a silver calcium one?
Is this right??
My handbook says "vehical equipped with lead/calcium battery (marked CA) no other type of battery is to be used"
Some times I sits and thinks - sometimes I just sits - is anything straight forward??? :dang:

the cold cranking on this battery is a little low .in my memory i recon it has to be at least 760 amp or basiclly high as affordable . as a rule i try to keep a near a possible as possible to the original ford fomoco battery and its label willl have the exact details necessary for coparasiin . i also recon halfords do a fairly well priced bosch silver battery and you are supporting local jobs..s

Halfords are dear for batteries. Same Bosch battery at least £15 cheaper at europarts.

That alphaline battery doesnt say silver calcium so may not be value for money.

Not sure what sealed calcium means? If you fit a non silver calcium battery it may have a short lifespan.

14.4volts+ when its being charged. Could boil it dry rather quickly,

Thanks guys but Im still rather confused about this as the handbook def' says lead/calcium and shows a motorcraft superstart battery with markings EMF 560 030 060 W, 1053141, 98 ab 10655 CA, 12V 105RC, 590A 60A h.
I dont want to get the wrong one and with auto part searches throwing up all different kinds even when entering the Reg No Id rather have a good idea of what I really need.
What I read re the silver calcium is that if you put one in a diesel that should have lead/calcium it may not charge properly?
As you have guessed Im on a learning curve here so all the forum help is well appreceiated as always.

OK - Got a Bosch Silve Calcium battery on tonight and the battery light is still comming on.
Didnt leave it runnig long so couldnt see if the alternator was going to start smoking.
Would the light clear itself if everything was ok??
Shoul I go ahead and get a new alt -this is a damn expensive week - Mrs Bs car has the cltch stuck after sitting and needs new front dics/pad and a slave cylinder - currently in the garage right after xmas - deep joy.

Alternator purchased - hopefully fit all on Friday!
Will check the fuses though - a smoking alternator cant be a good thing eh!

Modzillas right regards F30 though as that supplies the energizing current for the alternator rotor and also remote voltage sense (takes care of volt drop from alternator to battery fuse box).
