I was looking to get a panel filter for my 2.2 diesel, but cant seem to find anything? K&N produce a 2.0 diesel filter thats £35, will this fit the 2.2?

nope, tbh its typical ford, they'll use the same airbox for either engine.

if concerned, measure the size of your current filter and ask for the k&n dimensions and compare

I have read in some posts that several people found that the K & N filter wasnt really any better than a standard panel filter, also a few have said even the induction kits dont really help on diesels unless they have really good cold air intakes.

Hmkay… That makes me wonder how big of a job making a good cold air intake would be.
Perhaps combining an induction kit with a hood scoop would be of help? :-P

There have been mentions elsewhere on the forums that an intercooler upgrade would be a good investment,
when combined with the induction kit.

I saw one post on here with someone who had made their own hood for their cone filter, they ended up having to rehinge and raise the bonnet up, im not sure how if there is very little room upwards or if he just made it far too big. I put a larger intercooler on this weekend (stdrivers group buy with racebits) the car seems to be driving better and smoother with it.

I thought about making a better cold air inlet system or making some sort of air scoop to get cold air in better, but i was wondering with the maf being just after the air filter, wouldnt any modifications you do before it such as colder air or forced air or easier airflow with a performance filter etc be defeated by the maf, so it will  alter the air intake at the manifold to compensate and bring the car back to the same power as it was before it was modified. Thats why i put an bigger i/c on because its after the maf so will cool the air down better with no readings from the sensors. I could be completely wrong with that though.

i am not 100% sure of the mk3 bonnet bolt spacing, but you could fit bonnet raisers, from a cosworth if the holes are the same, this will lift the rear of the bonnet slightly allowing air to flow in.

The MK3 air intake sits right behind the front grill, what more cold air could you want.

The MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor will detect temperature and amount of air flowing in, and whatever it controls compensates for the amount,
but there's nothing there to compensate the _temperature_ of that air.
The only source of heat for this air coming in to the inlet manifold, is whatever the engine itself dissipates, which is far less on a diesel than on a petrol. :)

The colder the air reaching the inlet manifold, the better, regardless of how much of it. :)

Short of fitting the induction cone on the outside of the grille…? :P

Or just behind it. Inside or outside it won't make much difference. The suction of the air intake is quite powerful. I had a loose bit of masking tape behind my grill that disappeared. I found it the other week laying in the bottom of my airfilter box, beneath the filter.
