Not too sure if anyone can help with this but here goes.

Found myself in a car boot sale today and picked up a draper expert set of Torx and Alan key bits for a pound. Nearly complete but the box is trashed and has been closed up at some point with the bits wet. My question is does anyone know a good way to remove the rust or is it just a question of rubbing down with fine wet and dry? Some of the rust is heavy and flaky and some just light surface rust. Oh and is there any way of treating them to stop it coming back?

soak in wd40 for a day or two, most of it will come off, most surface rust will come off, the only way to treat the tools would be to have them shotblasted, and re-coated with something like zinc or chrome plating or galvanised.

Lots of heat is also good for rust...propane mix or map gas. (Was a tip on The salvager that used to be on sky, amazingly it works)

I have to admit I hate rusty/dirty tools so I clean and oil em now and again.

Electrolytic Rust Removal.

A small battery charger (6amp ish.) A plastic tub, Bicarbonate of Soda, A lump of steel (sacrificial)


Put enough water in the plastic tub to cover the items to be derusted, Add a few spoons of bicarb and mix.

Put the sacrificial steel in the water with enough material out of the water to put the positive crocodile clip on, If the clip enters the water it will rust.

Place the rusty item or items in the water and connect the negative crocodile clip into that/them. Wire several pieces together if required.

Switch on the charger and watch the bubbles (hydrogen gas, flammable) so vent well. After a few minutes you will see the rust moving from your
tools to the sacrificial metal.

Causes no damage to the rusty item that the rust has not already. Safest way to derust a lot of items.

As soon as you take it out of the water you MUST protect them right away or they will rust quickly.

I use Bilt Hamber deox gel.
Current Mondeos are:
53 Ink Blue ST220 estate
97 Panther black 2.5 ghia X saloon
And my other toys are:

Thanks for the replies guys.
Stevedohc16v that gel stuff looks brilliant have to give that a try.

I try and buy good quality second hand tool when I see them so i have a few around that could benefit from some of that gel.
