Hello all,
Wondered if anybody can has come across this:

My car is a 2002, 1.8 petrol with 130k miles. When decelerating, the car makes a loud resonating noise. Like a woodpecker in overdrive! It only happens when decelerating and the noise is less loud when pushing the clutch.

I had the car booked in today for ECR problems and I had hoped that this noise was related to it but the mechanic said that it has probably something to do with the drive shaft instead. It's a fairly loud noise but no physical vibrations. It shows only when decelerating and much louder with the clutch de-engaged (pedal not pushed) then when freewheeling (pedal pushed). Frequency is linear with vehicle speed. The noise is not there when driving constant speed, accelerating or standing stationary.

I had initially posted this thread in the Engine forum but since it now seems drivetrain related I am posting it here.

Anybody any thoughts as what could be causing this?

Thanks,
   - Hans.

could try spinning the wheel with it off the ground, see if its doing it then, it might assist with diagnosis. could be a driveshaft gone, cv joint etc...

Thrust bearing on the way out maybe, but would like to think you would hear it when they car was stood and the pedal not pressed if it was.
