Hi all,

My girlfriends 09 1.2 petrol KA needs a service, but there is no haynes manual for it yet so im finding details hard to come across. So I have some questions for you all I need answers fairly urgently please.

Firstly, what is the correct plug gap?

Where is the fuel filter located? the guy in my parts store said its inside the tank?! If any one knows how to go about changing it please let me know!

Where is the cabin filter located?

Is there a distributer and rotor arm? And where are the timing marks for the strobe light? Or is it all direct ignition?

Thanks a million in advance!!

i've not seen a distributor in a new ford car since the early 90's mate, its all done with a coilpack now, controlled by the ecu, you can "check" the timing as the timing marks for the cambelt are still there, but you can't do anything about it. Usually these days the spark plug gap is set in factory so you don't even need to check them before fitting, just bung them in as they come out the pack.

i would imagine with regards to the fuel filter its located just off the tank, along the fuel line to the engine, they are usually held onto a bracket with a jubilee clip, as your missus' is 09 reg you shouldn't need to replace the jubilee clip, the filter connectors have 2 tabs on them, on each end, just squeeze together and pull off, just be aware the fuel system is and will be pressurised, even when the engine's off, so you'll need to start the car, pull the fuel pump fuse out and let the car die before doing the filter, then once you've done it, prime the fuel system by turning the key to position 2, wait for 3 secs turn off and repeat, 3 times should be enough to prime the system. (you should hear the pump prime then shut off)

cabin filters seem to be in a common place on most fords, under the trim where the wiper motor is located, usually on the passenger side. chances are you'll need a star (torx)  allen key to get the trim off.

just bear in mind, i've never seen the engine bay of a new ka, so all info is speculative, the electronic ignition thro' coil is standard in all petrol cars, cars still need cambelts, but in my opinion, putting a filter inside the tank is idiotic! Hope my reply sheds some light, just sorry i can't state facts. :(

best of luck with your servicing, mate. Haynes currently have not released a date for their manual, its usually after the model is over 4 years old. (only just released '07 on mondeo mk4 manual)

no problems mate, not very often we see "distributor" mentioned these days! i believe the older ka's had ignition coils too and no dizzy...

I miss the old pinto engines, they were wicked to work on! i used to be able to set timing by ear and a test drive, cambelt changes were easy... the list goes on...

Well its all done thanks for the pointers siruncle!

The camera died so I've no photos unfortunatly. Sorry all.

      However,

      Oil and oil filter
The sump plug is a Fiat styled allen bolt not sure what the size was but I had a Fiat wrench that did the job. The filter is located right at the front on the driver side its a little awkward to get off too, the clearance between it and the sump isn't great so you have to use small turns to get it off.

The spark plugs are buried under the air box, but its not too hard to get at them, there's a breather pipe at the right hand side at the back which pops off, then there's a jubilee clipped pipe in the bottom left. Then its fixed to the engine with 2 bolts. Its fixed at the back with a rubbery fitting which it just pulls off (takes a right bit of force so make sure everything else is out first). Then slide out he intake pipe and its off.

Plugs are at the back of the engine and come out easy enough. HT leads are really tight so make sure they go back properly with a good click.

The air filter is inside the airbox and can be got to by undoo'ing the bolts around the middle of the air box assembly.

Gear box oil filler plug is at the front of the gearbox and is accessible from the topside of the engine but easier from the bottom (open this before the drain) the plug is the same size as the sump plug. I think is a 10mm allen bolt but don't hold me to it.
The drain plug is around the back of the engine, down near one of the suspension bushings. Its an 8mm allen bolt.

Its REALLY awkward to fill the gearbox. But about 2ft of hose pipe makes light work of it, I guess one of those funnels with a pipe on them would work great too.

I couldn't find the fuel filter though i didn't really have time to look for it properly.

Aaaaand the OBD port is under the steering wheel, there's a panel split in 2, its under the right hand panel.

Hope this helps somebody whos attempting something similar!

I've contacted Haynes about a manual, and they tell me they have no intentions of releasing a manual in the next 18months.

      Peter
