My rear silencer fell of a few weeks ago, tied up the pipe (the weld gave out where it enters the rear box) and got ready for a tractor sound when i started the car.......nothing you would'nt think it was off!, the only noise i have is the length of pipe knocking the parts of the underside of the car, (i know this by seeing it do this).

Now after reading a few posts it seems i can get away without fitted a new rear box, like i said noise wise, nothing so ok there but how will it effect the MOT? no leaking gasses it should be fine....yes?

If this is the case i will get some stainless exhaust pipe, need about 700mm, and join it to the exhaust, job done.

What size dia will i need?, i think its 50mm outside dia so was thinking get this size as it will fit over the orginal exhaust and let me clamp it tight, i will also need to fix it to the rubber mount at the rear of the car to stop it knocking the underside of the car, it seems to knock on the sill near the rear door, have plenty of movement so can move it away, but i should be able to make some sort of bracket up for this.

If anyone has any other ideals or methods would be nice to hear them

Cheers

Thanks for the reply, seen a length of 60mm (2 & quater inch?) you think this will clamp down enough on the orginal?

2 1/2" is 63.5mm, if thats outside dia then the inside is gonna be about 59-60mm
2 1/4" is 57.15mm, if thats the outside diameter of your existing pipe then 60mm outside diameter might not fit, (will be about 56mm inside diameter)
the 60mm pipe in the ebay link has a wall of 1.5mm, which is 3mm off the outside diameter, making the inside 57mm. (it might also have a seam (where its welded together which might eat away at the 57mm too.)
bear in mind outer and inner diameters, ideally you want to measure the car's exhaust and new pipe to ensure a good fit. A good exhaust clamp might tighten the pipe up 1-2mm, also you can use exhaust assembly paste which will harden and seal it up.

make 2 slits opposite each other and open it a bit then slide it on and clamp it that should do it as thats how you normally join sections. dont forget exhaust paste though.

Thanks for all the advice guys, helpful as always.
Im hoping to be able to fit a straight piece of stainless out through the back, as long as I can use the rubber mount to hang it tidy and of course cut a neat looking gap for it in the rear valance.
How much should it stick out the back?.....any kinda law?

i believe it should not protrude from the back of the vehicle, as in look straight down looking straight down the outside at the back (like birds eye view) and you shouldn't be able to see it.
