Hi,

Looking for advice on servicing my 2.0 tdci (53) mondeo. I'm going to do oil, filter and air filter. I don't know much about glow plugs, how often do they need changing and is it simple? (are there more than 1?) also what else would you recommend on a service, it's done 100k miles.

Thanks

Injectors are a big big job and prob better done by a garage. Fuel filter is a must. A good bosh one. :0)

Just looked at haynes about glow plugs, only replace them if they are broken, and its only a 2 spanner job so just like doing filters and oil. remove and replace

I thought the glow plugs were behind the inlet manifold which would need removed first, or is that only the 2.2?

Oh yeah sorry just read the full removal proceedure, it says take off manifold D'OH :tonofbricks:
from what i have read from people who have taken the manifold off to clean thanks to the dreaded egr it isnt too hard to do and like i said the whole job is a 2 out of 5 spanner job according to haynes, and they class changing bulbs as 2 spanners also.

Or then again does it mean you need only two complete spanners to bugger up that job where the main jobs need a load of them (5) all sat round scratching their arses and drinking cups of tea before they mess totaly it up.

Yeah think there's a few hoses need to be disconnected first before the inlet manifold can be removed - Coolant hose, Turbo outlet pipe and any wiring or vacuum hoses from across the inlet manifold. Also the Fuel Pressure sensor connector and EGR valve and pipe need removed and separated. After all that there are 8? bolts that need removed from the inlet manifold to allow it to be removed, taking care with the gaskets.

After all that you should have access to the glow plugs :kaffeetrinker_2:

Hopefully easier to do than it sounds!

Then the how to is here:-

i strongly suggest you read my how to in the wiki for glow plugs! you dont want to end up with a snapped glowplug and snapping is very common. a 2 spanner job if done right no doubt if not done right probably more like a 5 spanner job with a snapped plug

If the cars starts fine then i wouldnt worry about them, they only need changing if they break, they dont have a servicing time when they need changing like oil and filters.

As for servicing, like you said, oil, oil filter and air filter. probably pollen filter too.
Oil and filter are recommended every 6 months or 6250 miles, whichevers first. funnily enough haynes says air filter needs replacing every 3 years or 37000 miles, i usualy do it each year :kaffeetrinker_2:

How long has it been since last service?

read total s stickie .. long reach 10 mm socket ..rachet ....small eight ml. for the top nuts .a pliers will substitre for this but you need be careful not to drop the small top nuts ..down the open hole of an already removed glow plug ..this is why its a good idea to vaccume out the glow plug well before you start ..and again when the g plug is removed . and immediately plug the open orifice with a rag or a bung.....until you have replaced the glow plug with a new glow plug...You may also need a phillips screwdriver to first remove the glow plug connection from the insulated terminal to the right hand side ..this will insure there is no chance of the open connection wires shorting to the body during the job .........to test a glow plug you would also need a simple electrical test meter set on ohms by 1k and it is advisable to have purchased at least one new glow plug pref..an  ngk or bosch ..or neru.. then hold one lead of the test meter to the threaded top of the glow plut and the other lead to the engine body as earth . take a reading and note it down .. then repeat this process across the other three disconnected glowplugs and then test the known good new glowplug . and compare the readings  this will show up the bad gplugs from the good ones .but be prepared because it is often the case that all four g plug's are us if they have not been tested in prior years .Also i reccomend you start the motor and run the engine for around ten minutes before you attempt the removal of the gplugs to assist in removal they are quite tight and have a small thread which makes them very difficult to pry loose .you must esercise extreem care and use copious amounts of wd40 moving the glow plug little forward and a little back ward to gain its liberation great patience must be exercised and slow progress is always a must .s

top right of the forum is link to the ford wiki its very easy to navigate and find it.

if the car is at all lumpy on startup and any white smoke out the back you should really change them. long term starting the car with faulty or non working glowplugs can result in a bent conrod which generally means a new engine as its easier to do that than fix it.

its a bit hit and miss taking it to a garage as all it takes is some grease monkey who thinks they will come out easy and snap!! and a big bill to get it out at your expense. if you have patience and you can avoid being heavy handed it is a really easy job it just takes time. upto 15 mins per plug its worth it in the end. ive done it twice now on 2 cars and i would do it again if i had to. the first time was the hardest so to speak. hard as in when you were undoing one it would go tight quick so a lot of loosening and tighteening repeating it over and over.

I've had it over a year now I think it might of been done before I brought it but not 100% sure so it's gotta be done soon, thanks for the answers!

Right, done the air, oil and filters. Managed the pollen filter too. Any advice on the fuel filter? Read a few threads on how to do it but bit confused about sucking the diesel through a pipe? Any advice or easier procedure? Thanks

Glowplugs are a 2 spanner job for a brand new engine on the bench or a car thats driven from the
production line to the studio where they will strip it and photograph it.

Give them 100,000 miles worth of soot and carbon glued to them and its soon becomes a 4 spanner job, Or a
do not attempt this at home.
