hello all im new to the site and i hope you can help me. today i got a mondeo si and it was ok driving back until it started missfiring and cutting out at the lights ive searched the web to look for problems and found something about a rubber t bar and it says the pipe splits. is this a common problem and do you think that could be wrong with mine. its mainly at low revs it missfires but when you put your foot down its fine and when i pull upto lights i have to brake with my left foot and keep revving it with my right so it doesnt cut out. afterwards i took it round the block and it was fine but then i left it an hour and went back out and it started missfireing again. the car had been standing at a garage for around a month so some damp could of got into it but im not too sure as i cant see how it can be ok 1 min and then not the next.also i noticed a smell of petrol but i think that may be down to it not running properly im not sure please help

Hi, Welcome to MEG, I started having this problem,like an intermitant missfire, after it had been standing for about 10days, mine was well due for its service so got that out of the way, a full service,plugs,leads,air,oil & Fuel filters injector cleaner into the tank & a new cam belt, since then it's been sweet. I know it's not very technical, but from my own experiance it was missing when it needed a service & after it's been fine, hope this helps

yes i think it needs a service as the outside is nice and clean but the engine bay lokks like it hasnt been looked after how i like it. firstly i think il take off all the connections i can find and give them a good soaking with wd40 and see if that helps at all. and then il have to move on to things that cost money if that doesnt solve it. i cant fault the car besides that though i paid 400 for it with 12months mot and its got rs kit and the 16 5 spoke alloys so im happy apart from the missfire.

The rubber T piece is under the coil pack and costs a few quid. It sounds like that is your problem.

is that hard to do? do i have to remove the air filter pipes to get to it and is it a ford only part or can you get one from any good car shop many thanks paul

thank you very much i could do with the computer outside so i can read it as i do it lol. i just remembered the temprature didnt rise very high at all and i drove it back about 20 miles but it was mostly around 60mph. is it supposed to settle between the letter o and r of normal on the gauge as mine never even got to the n but the heaters was blowing warm air. cheers paul

mines a late mk 2 and gauge is different to yours but i do think it should read a bit higher than n could be a faulty sender or thermostat stuck slightly open.

sounds like the T Piece as said above by Vendee and others (vendee knows his stuff), as for the temp, get yer T-stat changed, they fail open, and very common, your engine and fuel mileage will lvoe you for it, not to mention your feet for the extra warmth.

Have you checked the connections on the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor?

whats the t-stat sorry for being dumb is it the thermostat or something different? theres so many different things on it lol. ive had newer escorts before and they didnt have as many little boxes and connections like this mondeo.

no i havent had chance as i only got it yesterday afternoon and it gets dark quite quick and i havent got a garage. i take it ive just got to find every single electrical plug i can and take them off and give them a good soaking in wd40. i just took my mum to work and it was fine for about a mile and then it was just like a kangaroo. i only thought it did it when it was warm but it looks like im wrong. thanks ever so much for your replys i dont know what id do without this forum cheers guys

t-stat is the thermostat, it controls and regulates engine temperature.

No it won't caused a missfire, its just a common failure item on these cars and something which might need looking at if the car is new to you.

Get the T piece changed first. It should only cost about £4. If that doesn't cure it then the next thing to check is the plugs/leads/coilpack.

The plugs should be NGK or Motorcraft (Ford) and should be gapped to 1.0mm. Leads should be Motorcraft and not cheaper ones from Halfords etc.

just to let you all know ive just stripped the air filter off and got to the t piece eventually lol and the person who had the car before me has kindly put tape over it instead of getting a new one. its complty knackered so im off to ford to get one and il let you know if it works thanks all who helped me i would never of known that. oh and its blocked inside at the junction is that a bad sign of anything?

finally got it done.it now starts and runs smooth but it feels like its holding back when i put my foot down and it was alot faster yesterday even with the blocked t piece. if you press the accelerator and rev it slightly it dies first and then revs? any idea what that could be. ive changed the plugs and leads and they are fine and cleaned all the connections up i can see. many thanks paul

its still missfiring and cutting out it always smells of petrol but it seems to have gained its power again now. just went to get road tax and its just undriveable with it cutting out everytime i stop and missfiring at low revs.
