The wife has a 2003 Ka, ignition light started to come on about 10 secs after starting and remained on, I checked the charge voltage on battery and was around 14.3v which seemed ok.

Web search pointed to the blue wire on alt being broken so put that down to check next.

Used car for a weekend all ok, light still on.

Went to use it Monday and dead as, no charge at all 100% flat battery.

My guess was alternator shorted or otherwise allowing battery to drain back through alt???

Do they have replaceable diode packs still or is it time for a new alternator??

Thanks

Dave

Looks like rectifier failure - connected up charged battery with an ammeter and there is a 4-5A drain on battery so thats why it went flat.

Disconnect the red lead from alternator and current drain drops to near zero.

Charges ok which is odd

Price of new is more than car is worth so looking for 2nd hand unit now.

Fitting is a whole bunch of pain it seems, local garage trick is to cut away front panel, change alt then weld panel back in!
