My boss has a 2l auto ghia x. For quite a while now its been idling very rough, between 500 and 700 rpm and it fluctuates. Also the gearbox is a bit clunky at times, sometimes it runs smooth next time its rough, it also drops out of overdrive from time to time with the overdrive flashing on the dash.
Anyone know if these two could be related?

Have you checked the level of your auto gearbox fluid ?

Also when you put it in gear does the idle speed stop changing , or say put on the heater full blast or all the headlights on ?

I have the same symptoms , not sure if its "normal"

This morning it was fine, sitting at 850rpm, but it changes constantly. He might start his car now and it'll start fluctuating between 500 and 900 again. When he changes it into gear it still fluctuates.
The gearbox fluid is at the right level as well.

i have a 97 ghia lux auto with same problem - ford told me ERG valve defekt ( cut rubber tube going too valve - put a bolt in tube ) and guess the car is OK :L
