The 4x4 system is from a Jag X-Type 3.0 sport which as most probably know is essentially a more expensive but less attractive ST220 with 4x4 - yes, there are some quite significant differences regarding the rear suspension set-up.
The gearbox is a modified version of the MTX75 fitted to the 5 speed ST220s, the difference being the additional drive splines from the RH side of the front diff casing that drive the transfer box. The transfer box is very similar to the one fitted to the Mk1 Mondeo Si 4x4 but slightly larger I believe. The rear diff is again the Jag item (standard open diff - no LSD) and is quite a bit heavier than the one fitted to the Mk1 4x4.
The rear suspension is independant exactly as it was as standard but with the addition of the rear diff mounted in the rear subframe and driveshafts running outwards to the knuckles where the Mondeo hub assemblies have been substituted for the Jag hubs.
Interesting project!

Edit:

The owner of the car, Jon, has very kindly allowed me to reproduce his diary here. A very interesting read

Edit 2:

The link to these files have changed, they are now located in our downloads directory, which is available here:

Nothing at the moment, it's just a thread I've spotted over on STOC. I've PM'ed the owner asking for more information, I'll point him this way so hopefully he can give us some updates :L

Cool.

That's going to be one to watch I think. Nice to see people thinking outside the box with their projects.

that was a nice read, hope the guy is able to sort it out, i know how he must be feeling, but ive had a longer wait i think, but im hopefully nearly there,

i bet it cost him quite a bit to have the forged pistons and rods made up for his car,

its something i would like to do with the 3L engine, but i just want to play with my st24 first,

looking forward to more on this update :)

finally somebody doing something decent with a st220, its only taken 8 or so years :}

interesting that the 4x4 conversion can be done without a tunnel being welded in, contrary to what all the "experts" on meg used to say.

just shows how easy the mk1 4x4 conversion would be onto a mk1/mk2 using mk1 4x4 bits...

i dread to think what all that is costing him at pumaspeed, he must have very deep pockets :shocked:

I read it all last night,i am in awe of the guys drive, to do two serious mods at once.

The work being carried out at Performace 3000,is the same company that did MondyTurbo's Mk3 turbo conversion.

I have a start off point to do this,i have the Dreamscience X-cal,that will save me £450 off the project total cost,got to be a lottery win for the rest :doh: .

It's a very impressive read, hell of a lot of work and hats off. It's ice to be able to read a project in English that's easy to read without things being repeated every 2 mins :}
Will be good to see where this goes next and hope to see it in the metal at some point.
Hope it doesn't just end up as a cancelled project for sale before completion.

my bad, sorry i misread and thought it said pumaspeed.

hate to say it but if i was taking on something like that i'd have gone somewhere with 4x4 rolling road equipment! otherwise it looks a very cool project.

good to see alot of thinking outside of the box on a mondeo for a change, we see these projects on escorts, sierras etc by the boatload but rarely on mondies.
