are you saying that the engine won,t turn over at normal starting speed to fire up?
my mother had this on a corsa turned out to be a damaged starter ring on the flywheel which meant that the starter had real trouble turning over

Could be as simple as duff glow plugs. If you can run a decent size extension cable out to your car do so and put a blower heater on it, protected by an RCD device, direct the blower into the air inlet and try and start. If it starts first time from cold its probably the glow plugs.

If it doesn't it could be the cold start wax stat thingy, its like an automatic choke for diesels, connected to the fuel pump via a bowden cable, the wax element sits under the battery tray.

If the heater thing doesnt work follow the cable from the wax stat thingy to the fuel pump and locate the little arm it operates, gently move that arm over as far as it will go against the spring without breaking anything and try and start, if it starts from cold its probably the xaw element thingy thats broke.

When mine went funny I sprayed the wax stat with WD40 and tapped it with a smallish hammer, worked ok for another three years.

It could be a million other things but the above are worth a go.

get a multimeter £5 in argos if you havent got one start the engine put it on the battery should show 14.4v or very close to it. If it is then battery is ok but if its higher its over charging and if lower its undercharging.
