I have a 2007 Mk3 ST TDCI. Brief history of the car since owning:

  • Aircon working when bought car back in May 2013
  • EGR valve replaced under warranty (battery was disconnected)
  • New battery replaced under warranty as bad cell in one supplied with car causing quite a few DTCs - all fine with new battery
  • Found out just before three month warranty expired air con now not working - not covered under warranty

I had a mobile air con guy to have a look last week and he checked the refrigerant levels, pipes, checked for leaks etc but found nothing un-toward. He couldn't get the air con to work until he bridged the air con relay in the fuse box. Said he hasn't come across this before, but says there isn't an earth signal being received by the relay.

He's offered to hook up a scan tool for the air con system for free (I have to take to his office, its not that far). He seems on the level, he charged me £60 but did spend at least nearly two hours trying to get it to work and emptied and regassed system.

Before I go back, is this something I can check myself? My knowledge of electrics is quite rudimentary, but I am quick learner and happy to get my hands dirty.

The air con guy got the air con working briefly buy bridging the air con relay in fuse box and I was able to control the air con using the EATC, so I think the EATC is fine.

I'm taking the car to him tomorrow so he can hook up an air con scan tool. I'll report back what he says.

Back from air con specialist, he hooked the car up to a solus scanner. He couldn't find any fault codes, and has no idea why the air con isn't working. He's suggested I get it looked at by an auto electrician, as thinks there is a short somewhere.

So, before I stump up more cash any suggestions to what I can look for are welcome.
