I have a really annoying resonating noise coming from the rear of the car ,I was told by the place that I bought the car that it coming from the tyres on account of being slightly worn . I'm sure it's more than that .could I have a dry rear axle or maybe need more gearbox oil, I'm not mechanical minded but I'm pretty sure it's not the tyres ? Any ideas would be much apprecited.

i have the same problem, just gone and bought two new tyres to see if it would cure it. and its still bloody there, i'm thinking wheel bearing
I don't want to waste money on tyres I don't need ,the noise is not coming from one side or another it's just there , mine is an estate so maybe they just do that ?
my wheel bearing was gone on mine when i went over pot wholes the sound would get worse if that helps
Ok thanks , I'll get it checked out , is it expensive to change the wheel bearings if it turns out to be the problem ?
i found one on ebay breaking off another mondeo for £25 quid and it was a peice of p*ss to fit but brand new ones on there are only £50 so not expensive at all
hi there

if it's a constant rumble, just getting a little louder as the speed increases, then i'd say it was the bearing.

jack up the rear of the car and spin the wheel. you'll soon hear it!

hth
Ok Thanks , i'll do that tomorrow , many thanks .
Move the offending tyre to the front of the car. If the noise moves then its your tyre ! I had this noise on my Mondy and it turned put to be the tyre (Pirelli P6000 with lots of tread on :annoyed:).

The noise got MUCH worse when i put it on the front due to the extra load going through it.
That's a coincidence , i've got the pirelli p6's on the back too , I've just bought different ones for the front & the noise seems quieter . I'm guessing it could be the blasted tyres then , I bought cheaper ones this time because pirellis are too expensive . £260 for 2 . I think not . I got some really meaty mid range ones for half that & they dont hum going down the road !!
got an estate aswell and a hum seems to be developing was going to try and check the wheel bearing next time ive got use of the whatever its called in english thingy that lifts ya car so ya can get the wheels off with two posts thingy ........wondering if ive been abroad too long
my mota has had an intermittent humming from the rear for about 3 years if not more, will find out shortly if its tyres or not though as i am going back to my summer wheels from the winter steelies shortly ( next couple of weeks )

but the rear bearings are known to dry out ( yet still be perfectly workable for the MOT etc ) but they will just drone on & on :(
Almost there..... It's a 2 post lift :)

I had a wheel bearing go on my fiesta st go from going round roundabouts on 2 wheels lol
jack the car up and shake the wheel like a mad man and you should hear and feel a knock, mine was so bad that it looked like it would fall off if you pulled it too hard lol

It is defo your tyres, as they start to ware they will feather on the inside edge and it gives off a sound like your bearing is going, i had dunlops sports and if you ran your hand along the inside edge you could feel it. when i changed them the noise has gone.
I had a annoying noise, seemed worse at around 20-30mph. Was going to swap the tyres round, but when I jacked the car up, it was fairly obvious that one hub was gone. i.e. the wheel wobbled.

So I guess if you swap the wheels you will find out either way, maybe :)
ive changed all my tyres and the hum is still there, but i can not tell where its comming from rear, front, near side, off side,?????? doing my head right in. so it could be hub, bearings, ive even thought of it could be drive shaft

Yes thats true lol
Just make sure you dont have directional tyres, as these cannot be rotated
Gravedigger your driveshaft being the problem would be more of a "clicking" noise then a "humming" noise I would imagine.

You could ask a garage to check it out then if its the hub try a scrappies or ebay.
yes going to get in booked in after the easter holidays, although its not a mondeo the troubles are all the same. going to check the top off my struts in the engine bay aswell
My monies on the bearing. My NSR is grumbling away, I went to change it in the bolts started to strip . Just got new bolt and they've changed the design because, 'the old wans used to fill up with crap and were a bugger tae get aff'... so say ford. Soak em in loose-all / WD40 stop lock etc.... It may help.
