I have a D70 with an 18-70 kit lens. The focus on the 18-55 is meant to be quite soft, from what I've heard. The 18-70 AF-S is more expensive, but the pics are gonna be noticeably sharper and will have more contrast too.
A budget 28-300 will give you an equivalent film focal length of approx 42-450 - I doubt you'd need that much, and image quality won't be all that good! (A decent long-range zoom is megabucks)

I guess the 28-200 would be a good general lens... Or get the 18-55 (or 18-70) kit lens and a 70-210 AF-D from fleabay. Best bet is to search the net for lens reviews - there are plenty around! A guy called Ken Rockwell has a review of the 70-210 and seems to like it...
