mine was a littel voer a 100 pounds for my Mk1 one cat, can't imagine it's a different one for a mk 2, i'd say expect to pay an hour's wages for it at the most.

can anyone shed a little light for me.

I've got no loss in power at all but a rattling from the cat area. I don't think the cat is on its way out.

are there things in that area that are known to break or rattle? I remember the escort had the cat mounting bracket that was common to fail but mondeos I'm not so sure. anyone help?

Hang on for a week or so...

Mine started rattling from the cat, or that area a few months back. It did it for a few days and then it stopped and hasn't been heard since.

Be careful my mates did just the same then it blocked and car would not run. when he took it to get fixed he had to have a whole new exhaust as it blocked all the baffles to , but if he had changed it when it first started doing it then he would of got away with just a new cat. :L

i found that teh heat shield on my cat had come away at one of the welds and vibrated at certain engine speeds. I just took the shield off and it stopped

You might want to consider a Cat from your local scrappy.

I had the rattly cat problem ^^^ about a year ago on my Mk1, went at just under 200K miles...

I got a Cat from my local scrappy for £30, they said it was sound (30 day guarantee), it apparently came off a car that was driven in for breaking.

I then phoned a few Tyre&Exhaust places to see if they would fit it for me. The franchise ones wouldn't (e.g. Kwik-Fit, National etc). One of the independants did tho, for a tenner :L It took them about an hour to do, but still kept to the agreed price :L :L :L

cheers, ive got a replacment budget one now for 85 quid so pretty pleased with that, just it had no bolts at either end and the top star things all sheared, luckily some HT roofing bolts slipped through them and fitted onto the manifold. like a whole new car now!
