Hi. I hope this is the correct forum.

My Mk4 diesel 2.0l hatchback has developed a clonking noise. When I come down off a speed bump I get a single clonk from the near side rear. Do we suspect drop links as primary suspect or has anyone any other ideas?

Edit: It has been fine for two years but the clonk does seem to be getting slowly louder. I don't know how to check suspension components so I'm asking for opinion, drop links seem to be easiest start point(?).

Wow this forum is not as busy as it used to be. Thanks for your reply, Purple.
I had a look today and it looks like it could indeed be the exhaust hitting the underside of the car. Why might it start to do this? Will changing the three rubber mounts help?

It could be a small stone trapped in the spring bearing.

Well I wiggled the exhaust to replicate the knocking noise, before writing my previous post above, and now the knocking noise is gone. Perhaps it was a stone or something which has now fallen out. Thanks for the advice, guys/gals, I will keep an ear on it.
