Dodgy Stat?

Evening all,
I've noticed recently that the car takes longer to heat up than before, and also drinks more fuel than before! I've used the onboard diagnostics when it's running to keep an eye on the head temps, and it takes about 11 miles of mostly reasonable acceleration/60/70mph stuff to get up to 90 degrees, however once it's there it does what it should and stays between 90 and 105.

Does this sound like a dodgy stat? She seems to stay under-temp for too long. I've tried it with the A/C on and off (and so, the engine fan on/off) and the results are the same.

I don't mind changing it, but don't really fancy blowing 70 quid on it if I don't have to!

Thanks in advance.

mine was the same, taking an age to heat up. during the the cold snap, i could hardly get up to 70oC.

Thanks for the quick response, looks like I'll be booking it in somewhere soon then! At least it's currently under-cooling rather than over-heating.

Am I right in saying that the Mondy has 2 thermostats? If so, is there any way of working out which one is needing replaced or will I have to get them both done?

Cheers,

Jamie
hi there

afaik, the petrol only has the one.

this is where i got mine...
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MONDEO-MK3-THERMOSTAT-HOUSING-18-2000-GEN-FORD-2001_W0QQitemZ370223111993QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item5633045f39

the diesel has two; one water, one oil.

Cheers Andy, I had spotted that one on eBay so will probably order it. Did you do yours yourself or take it to a garage? I live in Leicester now but am going to be in North Lanarkshire for a couple of days next week so if you've got a garage recommendation it would be appreciated!

Cheers,

Jamie
hi there

no, i got my mechanic to do it for me.

they're up at the fernhill shops, near rutherglen.
now, would they want to do another one???!!ha,ha!

they're very reliable if you want to use them. let me know and i'll pm you their number.

Cheers Andy, it's a bit far for me (Cumbernauld) but I'll keep them in mind if I've ever got anything else that needs done. I'm going to take a look and see if I can access all the bolts later today...if I can, I'll do the change myself.

Getting one of those thermostats ordered today though so hopefully I'll be able to have a look next weekend.
hi there

the wiki guide is very good. as it says, it's just a bit awkward to get to, space wise.
