Drilling out a hole to suit M12

This seems a very specific random question and I wasn't sure where to put it...

If I wanted to drill a hole out thats too small for an M12 bolt to fit in snugly.. do I use a 12mm drill bit? the hole doesn't need to be threaded just able to slide the bolt in without movement.

Yes sort of, the M12 refers to the outside diameter of the screw thread so a 12mm hole would give you a very snug fit and may even need opening up very slightly with a file.

Ah thanks for the answer, I ended up drilling a trial hole in a piece of wood first and it fit very snugly so carried on doing my rear beam hubs and was spot on.

Cheers
