My 2008 Mondeo displays "Stop light fault" on the dashboard and the driver side brake/stop light is not working.

I have tried different light bulbs of the same type.

Can it be a fuse? I guess both stop lights wouldn't work if it was a fuse?

I want to try to figure this one out a bit more before taking the car to a workshop.

Same fuse should serve both sides and the high level stop light.

Assuming it is a dual stop/position light bulb, does the position light still work?
If not, look for damage or corrosion at the bulbholder and where the earth wire is bolted to the body.

Rear light wiring diagram is one of the example pages here: Ford Mondeo (2007 - 2014) Repair Manuals

If you have replaced the bulb with a known good bulb, then the problem is likely the bulb holder itself or a wiring fault.
If you have a simple multimeter, you should be able to do some rudimentary checks at the bulb holder, though you will need someone to sit in the drivers seat and press the brake pedal for you
