drivers door can lock but not unlock the car

I can lock the doors from the driver's interior handle but I have to lean over and use the passenger handle to unlock them.

I don't know how the locking/unlocking mechanisms work, so if anyone could point me in the right direction to fix this, I'd appreciate it.

Does the button/electrical lock work or is it just the manual mode inop? Each door has an electric motor and a wire/rod connection.Sounds like you need the door liner off to check the wires etc and wher they clip into the lock..
Everything works fine except unlocking the drivers door manually from the inside. It's exactly the same as it would be if the car was deadlocked.

How does the deadlock function? This might give me a clue as to what's going on.
This sounds like the same problem ive got with my mk2, it will unlock with the key & handle inside, but not all the doors will unlock with the central locking function, ive worked it out that on the top of the lock is a little microswitch & its this that keeps getting stuck, but once ive sprayed it in WD40 it works fine, but i do need to replace both the locks in the summer.
