Do I have to use a ball bearing to block it, or can I use anything that fits (say a small screw)?

And is there any advantage/disadvantage in doing it that way, as opposed to using a blanking plate?

i used a small solid rod

infact its the long skrew shaft from a computers VGA plug conector, has a small theaded part and a long solid shaft with a little thumb knob on the end to aid removal
i used an oversized screw just incase it blew out but in the end brought a g/w blank plate for 3.00 and did it properly i think it runs far smoother blanked compleatly tbh and ive done over 800miles with no eml with the screw the light was on within 200miles just my opinion thou :)
I've used an oversized screw too.

Luckily, I don't have to worry about the EML coming on, as I have a euro 3 engine. :)
euro 3?

mines done a few miles and iv had no light come on :)
ahh mines euro 3 as well :)
