Hi all, just signed up here hopefully some of you can help me. My car is an 02 plate 2.5 Estate Ghia X, 90,000 miles. I've only had the car around a month and sometimes the engine will just cut out while idling, this is usually while waiting at traffic lights or junctions, it doesn't always happen but it happens enough for me to be worried about it, thankfully it hasn't happened while moving (yet).

Oh also before it cuts out it there's a weird noise from the engine area, it kinda sounds like someone blowing a low pitch flute for a few seconds, everytime I hear this noise it will cut out after the noise finishes. Sometimes while idling the engine feels kinda lumpy, don't really know how best to describe it but you can sort of feel it maybe juddering a bit.

If anyone can help me out with this it would be much appreciated, I don't really know much about engines and such but would like to get an idea what it could be and the potential costs to fix it?

Not too clued up with your engine bud but could be idle air control valve clogged up. Does it start easily after it's stalled

Yeah, starts straight back up no problem, it's really weird. But I'm sure that whining flute type noise has something to do with it, pretty sure the only time I ever hear that is just before it cuts out while idling.

Hmm possible vacume leak maybe. Sounds like something is opening which is causing the noise to then cause the stall

Mmmm, but if it's a leak it would leak all the time no? It doesn't cut out all the time, maybe 1 in 10 times at lights/junctions etc. and always with that noise preceeding it.

I do remember on the mondeo I had previous to this that it had a leak on one of the inlet pipes I think it was, but all that did was give ridiculousy high idle's (2000+ RPM) and terrible fuel consumption (16mpg was a 2.0 zetec auto) probably because it was running lean.

I'm wondering as certain things kick on and off luck egr valves. If something were to open that has a leak or split it may cause your issues. I'd defiantly try and clean the IACV and see how that does. Is it showing any dtc's

Sounds like you've definitely got an air leak somewhere. Take some time and look at all the pipes below the throttle body, especially the 90° elbows. Had to replace to of mine as they were perished and split.

Also, take the idle control valve off and give it a good clean with some carb cleaner.

I'm wondering if the 'flute' noise is the infamous moosing.....mines doing it at the mo, will try and get a video later.
