Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. Hoping someone can help me. I run a 1997 escort Ghia and have an issue with a clicking noise from the steering wheel area. Also a 'notchy' feel when turning. Just as the wheel passes the 12 oclock position it sticks slightly and then it jumps past that point with a click. Removed the cowlings and the indicator/wiper switch but no difference. I want to take off the steering wheel to investigate further and that's where I have a problem. On a previous (95) Escort I had, there were two torx bolts that you unscrewed from behind the steering wheel to release the airbag, but on this one there are just two blank studs.

Anybody know how you get the airbag off??

Thanks,

Colin.

Got a picture? Are they rivets? If they are, you will need to drill them out.

Any play in the steering lock or in the lower steering linkage (near the pedals)?

The top one is not blank its a torx drive, if you look closely in the centre there is

a 6 sided star shaped recess.

The lower one looks like a standard bolt, you may need a quality socket if the

space around it is tight. Better quality sockets tend to have thinner walls and

have the same or better strength than cheap sockets.
